Super Speedy Brooklyn Street Cleaning Does Anything But Clean

oo

Street cleaning in less than a New York minute!

Forget for a moment that the lunatic driver of this street cleaner almost ran me over as he came barreling down Smith Street and swerved into Carroll Street.

I am asking you, dear reader, to just consider that at this incredible speed, not even the smallest piece of paper was picked up by the 'sweeping mobile'.
Au contraire! The trash, along with leaves and dust, was airborne and settled back onto the streets seconds after the sweeper passed.

Small wonder then, that our streets look dirtier than ever before.

I think a call to Sanitation is in order.

Lately, I've been noticing that the cleaners are speeding up my block as well. Last time most of the leaf/paper/bottle debris was left behind.

Hi Best View,
Isn't it amazing? Most of the stuff just ends up blowing up in the air and ending up on the sidewalk in front of my house.

Quite a system.

The cops are speeding too and they leave (sometimes) small pieces of orange paper on the windshield.
A few weeks ago I got a ticket at 11:30am sharp.Since the,the same thing did happen to other cars in my street. They come a few minutes before, wait and jump on the cars to submit the ticket just in time.
A neighbor told me that he saw them fining a guy who double parked his car too early ..11:28!
Thank you for racketing us Mr Bloomberg! Election are coming soon.

For years now, whenever I see the street cleaners coming I move as quickly away as I can lest I get a lungful from the cloud of dust they kick up. They drive too fast to be effective and often leave the brushes running when they aren't sweeping. The worst part is the noise; these are some of the loudest trucks on the street, especially when they speed.

I too was nearly run down by the street sweeper the other day. Just after it ran the red light at Smith and 9th...

Almost as scary as nearly being run down is what you are breathing in when that dust that is kicked up. NJDEP scientists have found that street dust in neighborhoods with waste sites and in particular scrap metal yards can be contaminated with PCBs and heavy metals (http://www.state.nj.us/dep/dsr/health/trackdown-finalreport.pdf - see page 22 on scrap metal yards). Some communities are using vacuum sweepers or other specialized vehicles to remove fine contaminated particles during street sweeping (see epa fact sheet page 3 on street sweepers recommended for control of contaminated dust for information on available options http://www.epa.gov/OWM/mtb/dustctr.pdf)

I think they should get rid of them all together...

Do it like Paris, a broom made of branches quick flow of water...

Make it a workfare program, with a living wage...

those sweepers are loud, waste energy, and cost to much to maintain.

brooms I say!

Patrick,
Couldn't agree with you more.
I love those Paris brooms made of twigs and branches.

Here is another French Sanitation solution from Paris, where they actually use a huge vacuum cleaner to dispose of dog do. Clever.

Yep, there have been a number of times while waiting for the light to change on the corner of Court & Carroll (in front Casa Rosa) that the morning Street Cleaning comes tear a$$ing along Court Street and UP ONTO the pedestrian/wheelchair ramp.

If I weren't quick on my feet I'd have had my shoes & ankles polished by these idiots.

Now, imagine you're in a wheelchair & these guys come rushing at you!? And...

YES!!! I have seen them RUN THE LIGHT at that corner AND on the corner or Smith & President!!
