What Happened To "213 Mexican" On Smith Street?

One minute it's there, the next its gone...
Just noticed that the Mexican restaurant at 213 Smith Street between Butler and Baltic Streets, with the no frills name "213 Mexican", is closed. Newspapers cover the window, but there is no indication if the place has closed for good or simply undergoing a spruce-up.

"213 Mexican" just recently filled the space once occupied by El Pitayo, another Mexican restaurant. I seem to remember that there was a sushi restaurant there before that.

Anyone know if "213 Mexican" is coming back or if it's closed for good?
Will anyone miss it if it is? If not, what would you like to see in its place?

I called them the other night and got an answering machine. When I walked by a few days later I noticed it had closed up. We need some good Mexican. What is so difficult about that? One thing that drove me crazy was that El Pitayo and 213 both slathered on a red sauce on their combination platters so I always had to remember to ask them not to put it on. Both places were hit or miss. Oh, and what a lot of these places are calling "flautas" are really taquitos which are even more delicious especially with a little salsa verde.

doing some work in there. not sure what is happening.
213 was very good but since El Pitayo was pretty bad I don't think people realized how much had changed.

Don't we have a Mezcals way down on the south end of Court? I do like their food. That is kind of a walk though if you live in Boerum or Cobble hill or even north CG.

And just recently, the Mexican Restaurant on Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street closed. It had been there for at least 20 years.

Mezcals on the corner of atlantic and court didn't close... just moved a few doors down on court. There's also Pacifico (on Pacific) & Oaxaca )on Smith) for mexican, but I found 213 Mexican to be my favorite. Though it was too often empty, I've been there at least a dozen times and enjoyed the authenticity of flavors much more than other spots. I wish they were just remodeling... but my gut says the rent was jacked up. Restaurants and nightlife on Smith are the lifeblood of the neighborhood. Sad to see good places go under.
