PMFA Reader Christopher emailed me a few days ago to ask me if I had any information on the 'Brooklyn Indie Market space at Union and Smith Streets. Chris and his girlfriend are moving to Carroll Gardens next months. They are both artists and were looking forward to maybe selling some of their work there.
It would appear that the small market will not be back as Chris found out from the venue's web site, Brooklyn Indie Market. An update on the site states: "After four sumptuous years at Smith and Union Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Indie Market will not reopen at this location but has evolved into an event/wedding coordination and styling company, Clementine Events."
Meanwhile, a 'for rent' sign has been hung from the chain-link fence. Maybe someone will take over in time for spring. Lets only hope that whoever takes over the space will take down the (by now) rather sad looking tent.

And Christopher, if you read this: Welcome to the neighborhood!

How do these 'artists' affford the high rents here in Carroll Gardens? I'm being serious not snarky. Many oldtimers are priced out. Just curious, really.

Good question. Life here in Carroll Gardens has gotten way, way more expensive over the last ten years.

If it is a two income family, it is possible.

I agree, I hate the trend.

Overall, NYC, beside a few pockets, resisted the huge real estate price decrease that occured in the rest of the country... Too bad for first time buyers...

But great for old timers that are landlords!!!

Thanks Katia,

I look forward to exploring and contributing some images as we get to know the neighborhood.

Christopher.

Those "artists" don't live here they rent the tent space.
I hope they tear that mess down and get rid of it all
I hated that stupid tent. And the red and white iron boothes. Unsighltly. Plant some trees and add some benches. Oh, right, then it will resume being a dumping ground. Sigh.

I love how the comments always turn to real estate. Most likely Christopher the "artist" has a "real job" somewhere or managed to sublet or had a co-signer if they couldn't prove income from sales like "normal" people. Come on, now, there are many Graphic ARTISTS and other creatives that live here. So what? This is New York City. A creative person appreciates the area is that a crime? Oh no! Look! That person can draw!! Call the cops. :) I and my neighbors are all in "the arts". We've been here since 1989! Sheesh. And Im Italian! So there!

I think the word "artist" needs to be redefined. No old person is getting kicked out of anywhere just for some artist. . And, hello? People DO rent here not always buying. Relax already. Not eveyone who moves here hangs out on Smith street.
