With spring right around the corner, wouldn't it be great to give back to Carroll Park, everyone's favorite green oasis in the neighborhood? Below is a message from Sarah, one of the wonderful volunteers of Friends of Carroll Park. Read on:
Hi. I am the mom of a four-year old and am on the board of the Friends of Carroll Park, an all-volunteer non-profit org that works to improve the park for everyone. This means we want to help the park appeal to families with young kids (that's me!) or teens or grown children (that could be you!), our neighbors without kids (that's lots of my friends!), and our elders (that's our neighbors!).

I'm writing to entice you to join us, in small ways if not giant ones, to make a little difference this season in the park.

The days are lengthening and those of us who like to garden are pulling on our gloves to plant some of the early hardy annuals and clean the cobwebs off of our planting tables. What? No planting table at your place? Come on over to Carroll Park, where we would love to have your help - for a few hours, a few days, or all season long - tending a patch of the park.

Movie night under the stars with popcorn to munch and the leaves rustling above? Swing dancing on the ball-field to music by ole' blue eyes? A yoga clinic for pre-teens? Karaoke party? Double-dutch or hopscotch tournament? Video interviews of octogenarians who grew up around the park? Do you have a hankering to pull something (legal!) off in the park? We can brainstorm with you and help you along the way with things like permits and logistics; we are a small but mighty group and encourage all ideas.

Of course, we will also take cold hard cash for our coffers, but we'd rather have the creative ideas, the people-power and the interesting events that YOU can help bring about. Even if all you want to do is give a couple of hours toward something, we'd love to hear from you.

We invite you to a Volunteer Reception for past, current and prospective volunteers, on Saturday, April 16, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Robert Acito Park House at Carroll Park. You are also welcome to join us at our next monthly meeting, on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 in the Park House. Feel free to contact me with questions at sm_starling at yahoo dot com.

Best regards, and see you in the park!
Sarah
