The Cité of Carcassonne is a medieval city which was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. It was first settled in the 5th Century BC by the Gauls, then fitted with ramparts in the 4th and 5th century A.D. In the 12th century A.D., the vicomtes Trencavel built the castle within the walled city. In the 13th century, the cité was annexed by the King of France during one of the crusades. More fortification of the outside ramparts followed in later centuries.

It fell into neglect in the 16oo's. Luckily, architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc recognized the importance of this walled city and began a thorough restoration in the 1800s.

That's an amazing castle! It makes me want to travel to France. Great pictures!

You should consider making a separate blog for your vacation photos. I like coming here for Brooklyn news, but I don't like looking at your personal stuff (no offense). Of course you can post what you wish, it's your blog after all, but I suspect I'm not the only regular visitor who comes for news and leaves feeling a little voyeuristic and weird.

I kind of agree. I enjoy the neighborhood news way more. As Anon said though, you may do as you wish of course. Personally I think it odd that there's no mention of Independence Day at all as you spend it in France. Independence day was a HUGE deal around here years ago and you seem to enjoy writing about old neighborhood traditions. I'm sorry to say I think you missed the mark on this one.

Ouch about the comments critical of Katia writing about her adventures and discoveries as she travels. You who are critical have the option of just not reading, whereas those of us who look forward to being taken along on these intesting sojourns would feel a great loss if she were to discontinue. Pardon my being a tad critical here, but are you aware that the majority of Americans never make it out of the country? The world is a whole lot bigger than Caroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Actually, this is a very provincial attitude, this criticism. No offense, I am sure you are nice people. To me, the more personal an endeavor and voice is, the more it speaks to me. Thank you, Katia, for being so generous in sharing with us your personal views and interests. The fact that you are European also adds a flavor. This is whe you come from!

I have to disagree. I always look forward to Katia's travels to the charming little French village. It's a nice little escape from the hot Brooklyn summers.

Keep it up. I'm excited to see more photos of your family's beautiful home in the countryside and all the little stops along the way. You're not missing much around here.

Hey Anonymous and Detale, you're both two entitled assholes. Somehow you're owed a blog with the precise information you want? Nobody is forcing to read this blog. It is a personal blog, after all. A wonderful personal blog that's often centered around the author's Brooklyn neighborhood, and sometimes her travels to France. It's quite lovely. Get over yourselves.

I'm just here for the Brooklyn news, of which there is very little lately.

We all need to remember that this blog (like many others) is a personal one. We appreciate that Katia chooses to spend most of her time musing about her adopted neighborhood - Carroll Gardens.

Can she write about every topic important to her readers? No.
However, it's we readers who decide if what Katia writes about is important to us.

I've gotten used to Katia taking the Summer off - - but note: I think this is the very 1st year that Katia wrote a G.C. local story while she was away from home. So, I feel, we should say Thank You to her for it. Meanwhile...

Would it be nice is Katia had a local "Ghost Writer" to fill-in the 'Brooklyn Blanks' while she's away? - Yes, I think so. But that could be in addition to her travel-log, not instead of it. Yes, it would have been nice to turn to our favorite LOCAL blog and see "Happy 4th" or God Bless America" - but...

It's not our place to decide what Katia writes. However, this being an opinion page, there is no reason why Anon 7:23 & Detale should be attacked for their thoughts.

Therefore, I AM disappointed that anon 11:01 was allowed to have his/her foul language posted.
THAT is the only area in which I think Katia Dropped the ball!

Greetings Katia,

Just my two cents. I understand everyone is entitled to HAVE an opinion (doesn't mean we always need to hear it.)- but there seems to be a tinge of negativity here. If you don't want to see Katia's travels - then skip her blog until she comes back to Brooklyn. All one has to do is see what her titles for the day are. Obviously, I LOVE to see her photos and am greatful for this blog and all it represents. Her home page does say "...Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and Beyond..." Sheesh!
