Picture Of the Day: St. Agnes From Afar

St. Agnes, the neo-classic church that stands at the corner of Hoyt Street between Sackett and DeGraw Streets in Carroll Gardens, is a rather majestic structure from any vantage point. I have found though that the best view is from the other side of the Gowanus Canal.
This photo was taken early one morning last week from Third Avenue.

Did you know that the church was built in 1904, is one of the largest Catholic Churches in Brooklyn and that its 20 stained glass windows were made in Munich, Germany?

...and there are stained glass portraits of the apostles EXCEPT for St. James (the Lesser).

I took the tour of the church years ago....

Need to start a fund to for a St. James the Lesser window....

They do have open house tours. There is beautiful stain glass, from Germany. And it was built to be the seat of the Brooklyn Catholic Church.

The building's presence in the landscape is always impressive. It is sad to think that a rezoning that would allow tall buildings along the canal would destroy these views.

That is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen of St. Agnes in our landscape.

Well, thank you Margaret.

C.G. Family since before St. Agnes said...

Proud to have been one of the many families who helped to build St. Agnes. Part of our family donated the Mule Teams & Labor that carried the stones to the location. Another part of the family donated time and experience in setting said stones.
I'm the only one left - but still proud to be here in C.G.

Thank you for the beautiful picture.
