Vegetables or fruit?  Edible?  I must admit that I am not familiar with these two.

Whole Foods at Third Avenue and Third Street in Gowanus may impress some with its rooftop greenhouse, where Gotham Greens grows salad and tomatoes, but local residents seem to have just as much of a green thumb growing a rather surprising variety of fresh produce in and around the neighborhood.

Just take a look at some of these cucumbers, melons, peppers, and tomatoes.  Even kale seems to thrive in sidewalk containers in Gowanus.
I am not familiar with the two exotic looking fruits/ vegetables from the container garden on Hoyt Street.  Are they edible?  Does anyone know what they are?

What is the most exotic produce you have ever grown in your garden?

Beautiful pictures.

It's wonderful to see how local people are inspired to grow things.

Years ago a brave women took to gardening on the sidewalk at Union Street by the bridge and now has many hardy perennials there.

Can we hope for a Gowanus redevelopment plan that allows more of this? Shouldn't affordable housing also offer the choice to garden for yourself and your family?

I would love that idea, Community gardens like Fenway Community garden would be amazing. http://fenwayvictorygardens.com/wordpress.
How about raised growing beds on Public Place?

Hello All,

Just a reminder - if you're growing produce (to eat) make certain you do NOT use Pressure Treated Lumber/Wood for your container. The chemicals leach into the soil and into the food and then into you.
Decking and other treated wood is for growing Flowers ONLY.
