Though it was rather cold last Friday night, many Carroll Gardeners gathered in Carroll Park for the annual neighborhood tree lighting. Judging by the solemn looks on the faces of the very young, the moment when the colorful lights were turned on seemed to be magical.
It was only topped by the appearance of Santa Claus, who came strolling into Carroll Park from the direction of President Street.
My little friend Alaia asked me how he had gotten there. "He took the subway," I heard myself say.

After Santa's appearance, everyone was treated to some hot chocolate and cookies in the park house. This yearly event is hosted by the Court Street Merchants Association with the help of Friends of Carroll Park.  The tree lighting has become a wonderful Carroll Gardens tradition and it is wonderful to see so many young families take part.
