Here Is Something We Have Not Seen For A While In Carroll Gardens: Cars On Cinderblocks

Now here is something that we have not seen in Carroll Gardens for a number of years: cars on cinderblocks. Apparently, tire theft is making a comeback in the neighborhood.
Local residents Mike sent PMFA the photo above and wrote:

"I'm not sure if this happened anywhere else in the neighborhood, but two cars on Henry Street between Kane and Degraw had their tires stolen at some point overnight. They were up on cinder blocks and all the lug nuts were still next to the cars. Pretty bold considering Henry is a somewhat busy street, even in the wee hours of the morning, and that this was three blocks from a police station."

A neighbor told Mike that a third car on the block also was missing its wheels.
Just recently, one of our friends told us that he had his tires stolen while his car was parked on Carroll Street between Smith and Hoyt.
Have you heard about other incidents in and around Carroll Gardens?

I haven't heard of any other thefts in CG, but one of the local news programs just last week did a report on another Brooklyn neighborhood where several cars on one block had their tires stolen in the middle of the night. It looks like this is spreading.

Nine vehicles broken into on Plymouth Street in Dumbo last week judging by the piles of glass I counted.

Damn. Of course car break-ins and tire theft never went away, but in the past 10-15 years, they seemed the exception.

Exact same thing happened to my car in December 2010 with the see-saw cinderblocks (still have the picture in my phone) right in front of my house on President b/w Smith and Hoyt. Parked it that night, came out for work the next morning and wheels were gone. It was a theme then, as the cops said they were getting many calls about it in and around the area at that time.

It's more tempting now more than ever. They are quick and easy to steal, and a full set of good cast aluminum wheels with quality tires can cost between $1000 and $2000. It's a shame to see this coming back. One of those bad-old-days kind of things that I thought would never come back.

If only the Nevins Street hooked and crack vials littering the sidewalk would make a return.

While I don't have nice rims, I have the standard stock steel rims from the 80' on my older station wagon. Its the scrappers that worry me:

And awhile ago scrappers were stealing Mufflers/catalytic converters for the rare metals used in them......

just bought a pair of wheel locks. $40 bucks to protect $1500 is worth it.

What about those special locking lug nuts you can pay extra for with cars. Do they work with this sort of thing?

Car outside our house on 3rd Street, between Hoyt and Bond, was victimized in July 2012. They only took the back wheels and tires, however.

If you have nice rims/tires check that the lugs are tite, dudes will break all the nuts loose prior to the big nite when they come with the blocks for your skins.
