Many students and parents in Carroll Gardens probably already know Olivia Ramsey and her Smith Street Workshop, a new learning center which opened this past February at 581 Henry Street.
Ramsey was one of the founding teachers at Public School 58's French Dual Language Program. For five years, she taught kindergarten and 3rd grade at the school, before starting a small private tutoring practice out of her Smith Street apartment in 2013.
The practice was so successful that Olivia soon had a long waiting list.

She recently was able to expanded into a large space on Henry Street and is now able to offer individual and group tutoring, Common Core and SHSAT test prep for elementary, middle school and high school students. The learning center also offers after school French programs for children in pre-k to 8th grade. All classes are being taught by certified NYC teachers and the french programs are run by bilingual educators.
Currently, registration is open for weekly summer programs and a French Immersion Summer Camp.

Olivia, a Bank Street College Of Education graduate, clearly loves teaching and is passionate about her practice.  Last week, she was kind enough to invite me to visit the new space on Henry Street. It is bright and cheery, and stocked with books, games, toys, and art supplies.

Smith Street Workshop is a wonderful resource for students in this neighborhood, so please help spread the word.
You can learn more about the french classes and tutoring programs at www.smithstreetworkshop.com.

This is great- but how did they flip this from a apartment co-op to a commercial space?

I think community facilities like school, daycare and doctor offices can open anywhere.

What an extraordinary resource for families needing extra support or enrichment for their kids! Best of luck.

I'm so glad the neighborhood now has a place where elementary school students can get test prep for the SHSAT - never too young to start. Hopefully they can expand to tutoring pre-schoolers to ensure they are "Kindergarten-ready."
