A few days ago, reader Jeff reached out to PMFA to report that a  'for rent' sign had appeared on the red stucco one-story building at 224 Smith Street.  The building houses Angry Wade's, a sports bar that has occupied this location for quite a number of years now.
The bar is still open, but the signs certainly indicate that change is coming.
Jeff writes:
"I guess I've been here long enough for everyone on Smith St.'s lease to be up.
It's not my favorite bar in the neighborhood (that would be BGH) but it's probably the best sports bar on that end. And I always thought it added some character to the street. Oh well."

What do you think? Will you miss Angry Wades if it closes? What's your favorite neighborhood bar?

I hope Wade's sticks around, but this isn't a good sign. With the recent flip of Ceol into a brunch bar, Wade's is the last bar with any character and history left on Smith St.

I wonder if the one-story building would be raised for more glass condos.

Bully here...

Good God. This neighborhood has no soul. Looks like a great spot for a doggy daycare.

BGH is definitely the best bar in the hood. Angry Wade's... meh.

As a close neighbor of Angry Wade's (less than a half block), I won't be terribly sad by it closing. I have seen too many people stumble out the door, or down the 2 steps. I've seen customers puke in the street and then hail taxis. I've seen fistfights and shouting matches.

The sad thing is that the bar had so much more potential. It was always odd to me that they didn't try to do some sort of basic food beyond the popcorn machine and their weekend barbecue tent was just an odd arrangement.

It's a very small lot but it's prime to add a couple of stories to that building.

I'm trying to remember what it was before Wade's. I vaguely remember a Hispanic bar with a lot of motorcycles in front of it.

As much as I loath sports bars and this big red box with its crumbling smokers bench it grew on me. Hamburgers and hot dogs grilling. Always packed. People liked it and I can only surmise a tripled rent or a buy and destroy. Prime spot for a new ugly building. Or. A. Bank. I would like to see what this building was before in like 1920. Possibly a garage. Anyone?

I don't understand how anyone could prefer BGH to Abilene. It's more expensive, service is much worse, less bar seating and way too loud.

I can't say I'm surprised that Angry Wade's is closing. It increasingly seemed like much less of a fit in the neighborhood. We have our old school sports bar (Cody's) and we have new sanitized fake dive sports bars (Union Grounds, Wing Bar).

A dump like Wade's didn't have a staying power.

If the lot is zoned K1 it's long overdue for a teardown and I'd bet the house that it'll be a bank.

They may move to another location. I'll be sad to see them move or worse close forever. Both me and my good friend met our husbands there. Many great memories over the past 10 years.

I never dug Bovine Growth Hormone either. 8 is a crowd in there (especially when the strollers roll in), and the "floor" smells like the basement of a pig barn.

I enjoy Abilene, except when said strollers take over - but at least there is still room for the rest of the kidless in there. In over 10 years I've never bothered going to Cody's because, hey, there's Angry Wade's, Smithwick's/Ceol(RIP), or Abilene.

Wade's has been around a long time, if it's for rent it's not for lack of staying power. I still see way more people in there than Union Grounds (which has all of the personality of an airport bar).

I grew up in Brooklyn but not Carroll Gardens. I didn't discover Wade's until about 7 years ago. With that said, this spot has always been there for me. When my wife and I stumbled upon tough times, Wade's was there to welcome us and make us feel at home. That one year where I had to work a 15 hour X-Mas day shift it was my family and home by the burning fire. And all the craziness in between, I really hope this is just a bad rumor.
