I've always thought that Smith Street in that light bears a resemblance to paintings by Canaletto in the 1720s. Like the one's here (click on the second painting down, for example): http://www.wga.hu/html/c/canalett/2/index.html
You are right. Though Smith Street certainly isn't anywhere as pretty as Venice, the light does bear a definite resemblance to those paintings. Thanks for sending the link.
