Had not seen the Del Re's knife sharpening truck for a while, but for the second time in two weeks, I spotted it in Carroll Gardens. Glad to know that Mr. Del Re is still making the round.
I agree. I had a couple of knives sharpened a number of years ago, and it wasn't a very good job at all. The blades looked really bad when I looked at them in the light. I have a small kitchen knife sharpener and a whetstone (which I'm not good at) when I need a quick swipe. Otherwise, I take them to Cook's Companion on Atlantic Avenue.
It's a nice bit of tradition, but don't give him anything more delicate than lawnmower blades. He'll absolutely destroy your kitchen knives.
