We took the photos above at about 11 am, shortly after receiving the email. Sure enough, there are two very visible bullet holes in the front façade of the restaurant, one in the front door, one in the large glass window facing Court Street. The police had left by then, but Marco Polo's staff was cleaning up inside and was busy taping menus and restaurant reviews over the bullet holes
An employee at Parks Natural across the street told us that police were there when she showed up for work early this morning.
Does anyone know when this incident actually occurred or has any information?
+++ I heard from two sources that the shooting happened at about 6 am and that more than two shots were fired.
Heard 3 bangs this morning around 6am, thought it was a truck (was waiting for Fresh Direct delivery). Shortly afterwards got an alert on the Citizen app. Nuts!!
ReplyDeleteWhat's the citizen app?
DeleteThanks for the info. At least, few people were out in harms way at 6 am.
ReplyDeleteI was leaving body elite around 9am this morning. Two cops came in searching and then when I left two cops were outside the organic grocery. I assume it must be related to this.
ReplyDeleteTrying to find video. Usually businesses have cameras outside thier stores.
DeleteWhen I passed Parks Natural this morning there were about 10 upside down paper cups on the sidewalk. Iassumed there was shooting on that side of the street
ReplyDeleteYes, there were still three upside down cups with stones on them in front of Body Elite when I was there at 11.
ReplyDeleteI guess they were placed there to mark further bullets that had been shot.
Not sure "Sunday Morning News!" is the appropriate headline for this kind of event.
ReplyDeleteThis was a gang related issue total of 15 shots 5 were towards Marco Polo the rest seemed to be shot at a car driving talk to the officers this morning
ReplyDeleteI live a block away and heard 6 shots at 6am. Not used to hearing gunfire so close to home.
ReplyDeleteHere's the Post's story.

So i wasn’t dreaming. I heard 5 shots. And barely remember sirens after. Back in the day I always heard clack clack from Gowanus Houses.
ReplyDeleteBut never any sirens after.
You frightened me with this headline, which at first I thought meant “unidentified person shot inside Marco Polo” etc. Next time (though I hope there isn’t a next time) try something like, “Shots Fired At [Wherever], Property Damaged.”
ReplyDeleteOk, took the advice and changed the title of the post. Thanks.
ReplyDeletethe post story disputes the gang claim. that sounds very trump-esque to point finger somewhere else and say it had nothing to do with me.
ReplyDeleteMob related, wiseguy, whatever
ReplyDeleteThe only possible conclusion I can draw from the Chiricos running all over the internet pointing the finger at "gang violence" is that it isn't true.
ReplyDeleteinstead of assuming that this is about the owner, i wonder, what kind of signal is this really supposed to send to marco polo and was it, in fact, ultimately directed towards marco polo?
ReplyDeleteif you are simply trying to intimidate or extort a business, then it seems like a rather unwise gesture to shoot at it from across the street. not really effective because there are other ways to cause a nuisance or damage to a business and its reputation or to intimidate its personnel. russian mobsters, for example, are really good at damaging reputations with social media... so, why the bullets and why make such a public display of it?
granted, i know we're not dealing with the brightest and the best but let's not assume that this act was not thoughtfully considered. it wasn't a rash thing for someone to get up before 6 a.m. in order to put bullets into a vendor's facade. you don't don't do it as a spur of the moment thing.
so, who was this very public message really for? other businesses nearby? other people who do business with the people whom the messenger represents? the family and employees at marco polo?
i wish knew more about how organized crime works. always a noob.
It's for not paying what you owe. The damage is nothing compared to what CAN actually happen. Not many people in NY will be willing to pick up and leave New York and their families. Therefore, telling cops why they were targeted is out of the question. It's much easier for some people (not me) to mortgage their homes and sell their own mothers to pay off Wiseguys that they borrowed from or owe, even at 30%.
