Luxury development in flood-prone zones, accelerated development in gentrifying neighborhoods are excused by theoretical environmental mitigations such as green roofs and the promise of a smattering of so-called affordable units, most pitched to over 100% of median income, or $120,000. Our elected officials are willing to allow developments that will kill the Botanic Garden with shadows, create secondary displacement with buildings that are 70% market rate and provide incentives to do so through tax abatements and increased heights. The EPA is being diplomatic in this statement--shall we dub it "Muellerese"--which I can understand given today's politics. While the City spouts climate change mitigation policies, our elected officials basically sing "Eat, drink and be merry, because tomorrow we die" as they scoop up their REBNY $$. Did the EPA say that the excess capacity of our sewage treatment plant can't accommodate +2K GPD? Storm water on all of those properties currently overwhelm our plant and after development, all properties will capture the storm water so isn't that an improvement?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
