As Long As There Is Winn Discount...

oo

Amongst all of the sleeker boutiques and restaurants on Court, Winn Discount stands out in its bazaar like appearance. Brooms, trash cans, fake flowers and b.b.q. grills...whatever you are in the market for, Winn has it. And I am just talking about the merchandise displayed on the sidewalk. Enter the store, and more good stuff is waiting for you. The shelves are loaded to capacity. Is there anything one can't find at Winn's?

Winn Discount saved me several times when I lived in the area. It doesn't have everything, although I can't remember what I once wanted and they didn't have. The proximity to that good Italian grocery (with awesome eggplant parm) didn't hurt either. :)

Having just moved a bit firther away, I can't begin to tell you how much we miss Winn Discount! I don't think I've ever been in there and not found what I wanted...

Hello Best View,
I didn't know you used to live in my neck of the woods.
The grocery next door is called Mastellone's and I do shop there quite often myself, especially because we have no supermarket close by anymore.
I will have to try their eggplant now that you have mentioned it.

Unfortunately, Mastellone is not the store it used to be. I was a regular shopper when it occupied Winn's current space. Aside from being in a much larger space, it had a larger selection of food items, and I hate to say it, it was cleaner. I think I've been to Mastellone's about twice in the past 5 years. Now I shop at Met Food on Henry St, at Park Natural on Court/Union, and KY Fruits & Vegetables next door to Winn's. The number and variety of food stores in CG used to be awesome when I was growing up; now it leaves much to be desired.

Hi Brit,
I do hope that you have not moved away too far. We still need to get together with some of the other C.G.'s bloggers since we did not get it together a few months ago.

Isn't Winn the best? I choose it over CVS and Rite Aid anytime (unless, of course, I need a pharmacy)

Hi Anon,

You are so right. I had forgotten that Mastellone's had all that space at one time. How long ago would you say that was? More than 15 years ago? ( Groan...I am getting old)

Thank goodness for the KY Produce store. I couldn't survive without them.

Yes, Katia, I would say that Mastellone moved out of its space at least 15 years ago, if not more.

Damn...where has the time gone?

I seem to remember seeing a picture once of the brownstones that once stood in the place of the modern one story buildings that now house Winn and Mastellone's. But I don't remember what happened. Was there a fire at that location at one time?

I haven't got a clue where the time goes....it's amazing, isn't it. Sorry, I really don't know about the buildings that were previously there.

They have everything from hair dye to espresso pots. Which just TRY to find at Rite Aide!

I too am also to have K &Y fruit stand, it's ridiculous how few practical businesses are in the neighborhood. We have more spas than food stores!

Winn is great and I am there frequently as I live across the street. There is one thing that you cannot really find there...and that is a discount!
