I love the month of May in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. After a long year of isolation, it is wonderful to walk along Court and Smith Street and to run into neighborhood friends I have not seen for so long.

Here is to community, here is to beautiful sunny days, and here is to finally coming out of the Covid fog.

Strange to see the street and stores so empty.

Carroll Gardens Corona Diary: A Neighborhood Devoid Of Street Life In Black And White

The days are blending into each other during the Corona Pandemic of 2020, as most of us are staying safely at home, only venturing out for the bare necessities.
It seems as though time stands still. The streets in and around our beloved Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn are mostly devoid of pedestrians and traffic.
While stepping out, I can't help photographing our neighborhood during this unusual time. The emptiness has an eery beauty about it. The photos remind me of those wonderful historic black and white tax records taken by New York City of every block in the 1920's. I always wondered what it would be like taking a step back in time, into that past with few automobiles.
How strange then, to experience this new reality that we all share,
Turning my most recent photos of Carroll Gardens into black and white seems appropriate as we all adjust to a world that somehow seems unaltered, yet will never be the same.

Spring is in the air here in Brooklyn and the change of season is certainly reflected in this lovely yellow door with the most charming bunnies etched in its glass.

When The Carroll Park Bocce Guys Played In Carroll Park

Years ago, just like clockwork, the Italian bocce guys of Carroll Park would re-appear on the first nice spring days in the neighborhood, just as dependably as the daffodils and the ice cream truck.

They would spend hours meticulously grooming the court before the first game of the season, play and argue over the score, and then spend the rest of the afternoon chatting away.

The photos above where taken in April 2011, on one of those first warmer days, after what seemed an unending winter. Angelo Licata, Ralph Lubrono, Giovani Romano, Mario Feola, Nuncio Illiano and Giuseppe Coppola were kind enough to pose for me when I asked them if I could take their photo.

Sadly, these last few years, the bocce courts have remained empty as the older generation has passed away and many of Carroll Gardens' next Italian/American generation has moved away.

I was reminded of these lovely Italian gentlemen when someone stumbled onto the photos recently and reposted them on Facebook.

Though some Carroll Gardeners newcomers sometimes play bocce or pétanque, its French equivalent, in our neighborhood park, spring just hasn't been quite the same these past few years.
