One Of These Brownstones Is Not Like The Others

oo

Say, is that a gangplank?

16 4th Place

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn't belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,
Then you're absolutely...right!

One of these brownstones on 4th Place is not like the other. In the middle of a lovely row of century old townhouses, one has gained an addition which puts it at odds with the rest.

In my humble opinion, the 'topper' neither goes with the house nor with the neighborhood. But as I said, it's just my opinion. What's yours?

What I don't understand is why those additions are designed to look so deliberately out of context. If someone absolutely must build an addition, then why not make it blend in rather than stand out like a sore thumb? They look like bunkers more than anything else.

Because architects love putting their stamp on things?

Maybe they can paint it to match the brownstone colors?

Yes, some brown paint could help...a little.
I am always amazed that people buy into this neighborhood because they love the uninterrupted century old rows of brownstones and then be the first to ruin the continuity.

I live right next door and yes it's horribly out of place. Sadly it was developers that bought the building gutted it, added the horrendous top and then resold it.

I think it looks awesome.
Private rooftop deck for laying out in the summer sun, BBQ's etc.
A perfect world for the owner.
99.99999% of everyone does not even notice something like this.

People who are contantly complaining about every friggin
new construction project should shut up, go out and get yours.
The world changes.
Why not buy yourself a nice parcel of land say somewhere north and west of Rochester.
then move there.
