First Diners At Café Mei Mei On Court Street

oo

No, no, I did not eat at Chef Robert Ribant's new Café Mei Mei yet. Last night, I just happened to walk by the space once occupied by Jill's Café at 231 Court Street, noticed the diners inside and snapped these photos.
From Mei Mei's web site comes this description of the new eatery:

Café Mei Mei is an American café, keeping its fingers on the pulse of the seasons. With a great core menu focused on American, Seasonal and Regional fare. The Chef will be doing daily specials that will depend on the best Seasonal and Freshest ingredients.

The menu will change four times a year – winter, spring, summer and autumn. Since the chef loves seafood there will be great attention to a variety of fresh fish from local waters and around the world.

If you were one of the diners last night, could you share the details with the rest of us, please?

That was actually a staff tasting session. We open our doors starting tomorrow (Monday) for lunch and dinner. Check us out!

I had dinner there on Sunday night. While the menu, food and service were nicely executed, the ambiance and decor had completely gone amiss. We couldn't help but notice the restaurant's design reflected a frozen yogurt shop with bright lighting to boot. The music selection was also odd and unfit. 90's grunge rock with a sprinkle of Johnny Cash. Not the kind of mood I'm looking for if I'm spending $18 on an appetizer. Hopefully, these kinks will work themselves out as time progresses.

I ate at Cafe Mei Mei on Saturday. The food and the service were fantastic. However, there are definitely things to be improved on: (1) poor ventilation: it smelled a lot from the open kitchen and the opened back door did not help; (2) a radio station that played Frank Sinatra with the occasional radio announcer every 15 minutes or so; (3) the prices are very steep for this neighborhood: the special steak was $50 (!) and the Foie Gras Terrine $25. I hope they work those things out.

Whoa, JFT. Steep prices on the menu and radio music? They should at least be able to afford a few CDs! The prices may be steep because their space is expensive to rent. That's a major consideration when eating out - you're helping to pay the restaurant's rent!
