Just Announced!
EPA
Lists
Gowanus Canal
as
SUPERFUND !
After almost 200 years of industrial pollution and neglect, the Environmental Protection Agency is stepping in to clean the filthy urban waterway.
Disregarding politics, the E.P.A. based its decision to name the Gowanus Canal to the national priority's list as a Superfund Site purely on science. Though New York City's Mayor Bloomberg, as well as developers, lobbied intensely against the listing, the E.P.A. proved that it was not going to be deterred by special interests from cleaning the toxic canal.

The City's Plan Was Too Little, Too Late!
New York City has for years steamrolled residents' concerns and common sense in the pursuit of development along the banks of the Gowanus Canal. Planning has been mostly abandoned to the quest for quick profits and deferred costs. At the very last moment, our city officials tried to make up for decades of inaction and presented a hastily crafted plan designed to deter the EPA, the one organization best equipped to get the job done.
Of course, development interests also stepped up and tried to distract everyone from the fact that our officials were willing to overlook public health once again on behalf of private profits. They formed advocacy groups and pretended to represent the community's interest since they were willing to build their toxic towers using affordable housing as bait. They've made wild claims that we wouldn't be able buy or sell or insure our million dollar houses in this; one of the most desirable New York neighborhoods.
Science and Common Sense Prevails!
Luckily, a coalition of local groups and residents banded together to speak for the interests of the community and opposed the misinformation presented by the people who preferred to build now and worry later. This group grew out of a common desire to finally stop the stalling of our city administration and seize the opportunity presented by the EPA. They visited all of our elected officials to assure them that the community was overwhelmingly in support of a Superfund designation despite the negative connotations portrayed by those interested only in a quick buck. After years of favoring developers, they didn't trust NYC to do the right thing.
Some Officials Get it Right.
It's amazing how some of our elected officials can disregard the majority of the people they represent and explain away their concerns in support of vague (often lost) public benefits and certain (rarely lost) financial gain of a few well connected individuals, and then pretend we are a democracy. In this case, we have a few elected heroes who had the courage to recognize the obvious, that despite the platitudes offered by our city administration, the EPA offered the best hope for cleaning the canal. They deserve to be named:
US Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez
NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery
NYS Senator Daniel Squadron

Where do we go from here ?
Today's announcement by the E.P.A. is the best news this community could have hoped for.
It means that, finally, our concerns have been heard and that future generations will be able to live and thrive along the shores of a safe Gowanus Canal.
We sincerely hope that our New York City administration will finally do the right thing by joining the E.P.A. and committing itself to cleaning the canal as it has claimed it would.
So, at last, our long ordeal is over. 200 years in the making, a full year in deliberation and now we have reached the end of the beginning.

Pulitzer Prize stuff Katia...THANK YOU for the commitment to maintaining the focus.
Superfunding the Gowanus is a great tribute to our environment and the communities that surround her.
Thank you to the EPA and the elected officials who stood by the Gowanus. Their effort to protect the health and safety of our families will not be forgotten.
Fantastic News!
Thank yous to State Senators Montomery and Squadron and of course Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. Not to mention Walter Mugden and crew.
Let's all hope that Bloomberg does not continue to try and obstruct the EPA's efforts and instead works in partnership with them.
Yes!!!
I'm pretty sure you broke this story, Katia! You for sure beat the Times!
Thanks for the update Katia! I'm really looking forward to hearing about the public meeting that will happen on Thursday. Looking forward to your detailed recap! I hope some folks are able to get video and photos to post. Thanks again!
Thankyou Katia! You are a wonderful advocate. Time to write some thank you letters.
Do you know what the meeting this week will cover?
Just heard the official announcement on NPR news at 11!
YES WE CAN!
Marlene
Wonderful News! Thank you to all who put the environment and the health of the community first.
Elizabeth
I look forward to the Canal being cleaned in about 25 years! Congrats for halting development indefinitely, which is clearly the real goal underlying this whole fight.
You truly scooped everyone with this breaking news. I read your twitter feed post on my phone this morn and couldn't find the news anywhere else. even now at 11:31. Great job!

Just think how much quicker the process will go if Clean Gowanus Now refrains from suing and actually cooperates with the EPA.
Anon 12:13: Imagine how much faster it will go if the Canal could clean itself! There are a lot of ways it can be cleaned faster. I choose to base my opinions on realistic expectations

Future generations of CG will thank all the people who acted to clean this canal. They will also remember that a mayor aka Bloomberg and some greedy developers were against it.
This a victory for the Free People of Carroll Gardens.
To 2:29 PM
"imagine ..if the Canal could clean itself!"
Sure!
I would also imagine a mayor to clean himself too...
Thank you EPA! You have done the right thing under a tremendous amount of pressure and we are truly grateful. We know you take this responsibility seriously. You have said that you strive to earn and keep our trust. We look forward to working with you.
Thanks to our elected officials who supported designation, especially State Senators Montgomery and Squadron and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. Thanks to NY State for asking the EPA for help. You are honorable people.
Thanks to all of the community activists and citizens who made their voices heard. Wow!
Power to the People!!!
fyi anon 11:32am, i heard it on 1010 wins radio. pulitzer for katia? i doubt she'll pay the increased tax levied on homeowners for the cleanup. she sounds like a renter.
Josephine,
Homeowners won't see higher property taxes as that is controlled.
The City now owes the EPA millions and that will be paid for by cuts in our services (teachers, police, parks, etc.) With City agencies facing budget cuts of 20-30%, this couldn't have happened at a worse time.
Many may say such statements are "fear mongering", partly because it's fun to use the word "monger" and partly because they believe private polluters will pay the EPA.
Of course, the City will (should) fight this unfair "super-tax" and we can expect years of lawsuits so what's next for the Gowanus Canal? Absolutely nothing! Should I say it again? Absolutely nothing.
