Spend an hour or two painting, weeding, planting, and mulching in Carroll Park during the citywide "It's My Park Day"; then join the Friends of Carroll Park at 3:00 Pm for refreshments in the Robert Acito Park House.
You'll feel good about volunteering and sprucing up everyone's favorite place in the neighborhood.

Activities for Kids at It's My Park Day!
Carroll Park, Saturday, May 21, 11:00 - 3:00

I am coordinating some activities for kids to run parallel with the gardening and beautification projects that will take place in Carroll Park this Saturday. Come on out to help spruce up the park, and bring your kids to participate in any or all of the following activities. In keeping with the Parks Department's "Be Fit NYC" theme, we're planning some get-up-and-go activities along with some more sedentary options. All activities open to all ages - older kids will be welcome helpers!! (We'll either be in front of the Park House or right behind it, so check both locations.) Would love your help pulling this off, if you are inclined to come by to lend an adult hand to this effort :-)

=============================
11:00 - 11:30 - Planting seeds
We'll provide the containers, seeds and potting soil, plus some running commentary about growing things (any pros out there want to come offer up the talkin' while I do the dirty work?). Kids take home some planted seeds to
nurture. Will have marigolds and herbs, and maybe zinnias (and printed instructions to carry away, if I can pull that together).

=============================
12:00 - 12:30 - Long-jumping
We'll chalk a start line and all see how far we can jump, with a good running start. We'll have 2 different start lines, for the 5-and-under crowd, and the 6-and-up crowd. Buddies will make note of the jumper's distance, but the jumper gets to make the chalk mark, mark his or her name, and measure the distance!

=============================
1:00 - 1:30 - Imagining Your Own Plant
Based on Native NYC Plants We'll have color pictures of various plants, trees, and bushes native to NYC as inspiration, but the task will be to start with one of them and then draw a fantastical plant based on a real one. Who says plants can't have googly eyes?

=============================
2:00 - 2:30 - Mystery Mural
A print of a mystery image will be cut into squares. Each child will be given a square, and will be told which square on the pre-chalked grid is hers or his. They'll go to it, chalking in their images, and at the end of the exercise,
we'll have the Carroll Park Kids' version of the original. Photos of outcome sure to be a hit!

=============================
2:40 - 3:00 - I Spy
We'll start in front of the Park House, where I'll explain the rules. As a group, we'll jog to several locations in the park, and kids will take turns identifying objects in the park while the rest of us try to guess the item - limit 4 guesses for each object before we jog to the next location. A little bit of red light-green light thrown in for the fun of it.
