Brooke, a native of Minnesota, moved to Minneapolis in the fall of 2013, but just recently came back to Brooklyn. This past February, she was able to find a space in which to re-open Bird House.
The new salon is located at 26 10th Street in the heart of Gowanus. Not only is it much larger and sunnier than her previous salon, she now has a new partner, her sister Nicci Hubert, who acts as salon director.I recently visited Brooke and Nicci in the new salon. It is clear that Brooke is super excited to be back in Brooklyn and happy to have her sister by her side. Brooke explained that she had stayed in touch with her New York clients after moving to Minneapolis. She made several trips back to the City and made house calls, so she never lost contact with her clientele. "When I moved back to Brooklyn at the beginning of this year, I got my business going here as quickly as possible," she explains.
Several of her customers jumped right in to help. One client designed the salon's logo, another helped find the new location in Gowanus.
"We are really proud to be in Gowanus," Nicci told me. "It is amazing to see how supportive the community is here." The sisters feel welcomed by the other businesses in the neighborhood. "There is a real sense of camaraderie."
To celebrate the new and improved Bird House, Brooke and Nicci will be offering a toast with some bubbly and little sweet treats, provided it part by Gowanus Wine Merchants and Buttermilk Bakeshop. The celebration is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 7 PM at the salon.
For the occasion, The Bird House will also be offering a rare 10% discount on hair products, so mark your calendar and RSVP for the event here.
Brooke and Nicci told me that their parents will be coming into town to attend the celebration, which proves that The Bird House is truly a family business.
