The new outpost of Bergen Bagels at 285 Court Street, at the corner of Douglass Street, seems to be coming along nicely. The walls have been tiled and the refrigeration equipment moved into this very large storefront. I was able to pop my head in yesterday to asked the name of this new establishment, but the construction workers did not know. However, an internet search revealed a page for "Cobble Hills Bagels" at that address.
Carroll Gardens actually needs a good bagel store. Bagels By The Park just never cut it, as far as I was concerned and (F) Line Bagels at 9th Street is just too far away.
Where have you been buying your bagels in the neighborhood? Are you looking forward to a new option?
Number 285 Court Street used to be a paint store for many years. The storefront has remained empty for quite a while. The building was sold for $2,3000.000 in June 2012.
Happy to see a new place opening in that space, but Mocha Bagels is quite good and only a couple blocks away.
ReplyDeleteMost places in the neighborhood just bring in bagels from Manhattan and call it a day. I hope they will be making fresh bagels on-site at this now place or it will be just another place to grab overpriced coffee and keep moving…and we don’t need more of those.
ReplyDeleteI live right by Line Bagels. I used to go there almost daily for years. But they continually over-bake their bagels. The bottoms are often impossible to chew through. When I get a bagel now, I make the trip up to Mocha Bagels. Their bagels are really good!
ReplyDeleteNo mention of Mocha Bagels? They've got guacamole cream cheese and they're open 24 hours!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone. Mocha on Smith neat the Met Food bakes a great bagel.
ReplyDeleteCourt Street Bagels...best bagels in the area. Some people might think its too far- but thats just being lazy.
ReplyDeleteKatia, did you see industrial baking equipment and those big ovens? Will they be baking on site?
ReplyDeleteBergen Bagels used to be my boro favorite until Mocha opened up. A delicious bagelry disguised as a corner store.
ReplyDeleteI did not go all the way back, but its a deep store and there certainly is enough space for ovens.
ReplyDeleteMocha Bagels has the best bagels in the hood. Pleasant surprise!
ReplyDeleteThe bagels ate Brooklyn Bread are AMAZINGGGG
ReplyDeleteWow. O-Line is too far. I'm sorry, forgot the world revolves around you. Bagels on the Park doesn't cut it? Tell that to the people that pack the place every morning. I guess you totally forgot about Court Bagel, Mocha, and probably the best, Brooklyn Bread. Get out a little.
ReplyDeleteBrooklyn Bread bagels aren't really a true bagel. Boiled then baked but I LOVE them because they are light and more like a roll. Amazing toasted. The real bagel, sadly, are made in Manhattan. At Ess A Bagel. Though, I'm a Bialy fan. maybe the court place will be Ok. I miss JFC Paint Center.
ReplyDeleteLove Mocha Bagels!! It opened right after we moved into the neighborhood and their bagels are great. No sitting but I generally grab bagels and bring them home so I don't mind.
ReplyDeleteI know it's too far for Katia, but the Bagel Cafe on Atlantic and Clinton (formerly B&B Empire) has great bagels, all made on premises.
ReplyDeleteBagels on the Park makes mediocre bagels. They are jam packed every morning not because they make a superior bagel but because they benefit from being right on top of the subway station. People will accept mediocrity if they don't have to be inconvenienced by going out of their way. They also benefit from being across from Carroll Park and PS 58. They serve good coffee (D'Amico's if I recall) and that helps a ton too.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's weird you just slam Bagels by the Park like that, Katia. They've been a good place for many years. Maybe you just have a grudge against them for some reason? Jamie Geritano and his brother Jerry have been around for years and have a lot of friends. You should temper your opinions with slightly more journalistic integrity rather than slamming one of the longer running places around.
ReplyDeleteBut it's your blog. You pretty much can say whatever you want, I suppose. And you do.
That's right and yes, these are my personal opinions.
ReplyDeleteAnd some might disagree. That's all right.
I am just saying that it will be great to have another option and am looking forward to (hopefully) better bagels.
Mazzola's!
