***Update***
Just received word from several readers that Cobblestone will be relocating to Atlantic Avenue, which is great news.)
Executive Chef and owner Jeremy Wachalter took over the space from Tuller Premium Food back in 2006. Though his retail store on Court Street may be closing, he will no doubt continue to offer his full-service event planning and catering service.
What , other than a nail salon, bank or pre-school, would do well in this Court Street location?
According to someone who works there, they will remain open but are moving to a location closer to Atlantic.
ReplyDeleteHeard the same from several other readers and have updated the post. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteStores/business on Court St/Smith St can only last as long as we the residents buy what they sell. It might help our local businesses if they 1) sold items us locals need and 2) didn't charge so much. Of course the price they charge is somewhat a function of the rent & other overhead they have to pay. In short, it all come back to us. If the landlord over charges, the store over charges and we don't shop there & they close the store. We are the problem and the solution.
ReplyDelete"We" are the problem? I beg to differ. If a store charges twice what someone else does for the same or similar product, even if it's to cover their costs and overhead, tell us who's dumb enough to pay double, unless they're dripping in money? The landlords are the problem when they hike rents to $30,000 a month when a business might have been paying way less. Really? Their costs certainly haven't gone up that much overnight. I'm an owner, and my costs haven't gone up a fraction of that. It's all greed -- gouge your retail tenant, get as much $$ as you can from anyone who will pay it, and the rest of you be damned. I was not a customer of Cobblestone, not because of their prices if that might have been the issue, but because it didn't sell anything I was interested in. If they closed because shoppers didn't want what they sold, then that's their misfortune. These days, if a merchant doesn't own the building his/her establishment occupies, then you know their days are numbered. It's only a matter of time. The landlord is the problem and the solution.
ReplyDeleteJust a reminder, Cobblestone is just moving to Atlantic Avenue as some readers have mentioned. We have no idea if a rent hike by the landlord is behind the closing of the storefront on Court Street.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame. Their soups are the best around and reasonably priced. So is a whole roasted chicken with two sides. Atlantic Ave? Not the same!
ReplyDeleteHi All -
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comments + love! We will be open in a few short weeks and we will be on Atlantic right at Court...about 2 hops away! We are extremely excited for our new space and cannot wait to share it with all of our dedicated customers.
It will be bigger and MUCH nicer...so you are correct, its not the same - its MUCH better!
The rent hike was not the issue - we chose to buy the building we thought would better service our customers and renovate. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Best,
Jeremy
