Gourmet Fresh, at 437 Court Street between 3rd and 4th Place, has been another option, though it is rather small. However, a recent expansion into the space next door has increased its space by 50%, which is great news.
Gourmet Fresh now has a larger fruit and vegetable selection and hopefully, more items will be added to provide the neighborhood with another viable grocery store, even if their prices are still way too high.
The storefront Gourmet Fresh took over for the expansion was previously occupied by Amelia's Hair Salon which had been there for quite a number of years. Amelia herself can still be found at Donne Salon on Smith Street, so she is still in the neighborhood.
What do you think of Gourmet Fresh's extra space and food offerings? Does it replace a full sized supermarket in Carroll Gardens?
Shopping carefully at Whole Foods is cheaper than Gourmet Fresh. Nothing against Gourmet Fresh, they're great for the neighborhood, but let's not pretend that Whole Foods is in a different category of pricing.
ReplyDeleteI don't shop at Gourmet Fresh every often, but when i do, I like the idea that they don't drench their produce with a hose or bury it in ice cubes like many green grocers do.
ReplyDeleteGourmet Fresh isn't particularly affordable. And though it's great to give its cashier jobs to the neighborhood high schoolers, they could really benefit from some good customer service training.
ReplyDeleteThey increased their previous space by 50%...
ReplyDeleteI have always been bad a math. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteWill correct the post.
They are convenient, but neither gourmet nor fresh from my experience. Much prefer Sue and Joe. I really object to stores where prices are not readily displayed. Sticker shock when you reach the register.
ReplyDeleteI'll second the fact that it isn't very fresh - I've stopped buying anything fresh unless I know I can use it within a day or two. Too many things have gone off way too quickly, or are already so in the store. And it isn't cheaper.
ReplyDeleteI second going next door to Sue and Jo - I do half of my shopping there, and the other half at Whole Foods (which isn't actually more expensive than GF on most items).
The new space makes it nicer to shop on the rare occasions I do go in.
