Carroll Gardens' Weird Crime Wave: The Theft Of Fuel Oil Filler Caps
This is very strange, dear reader, I admit, but someone in Carroll Gardens has been going around stealing fuel oil filler caps in front of brownstones.
Local resident Tony told me that he noticed his cap missing just as his neighbor realized that his was gone as well. When Tony went to a fuel supply store on Fourth Avenue to replace his, the vendor asked him if he lived on Fourth Street. Surprised, Tony said no, but asked why the man wanted to know. It turns out that one entire block on Fourth Street was robbed of its caps and all those residents had been in to buy new ones. ( The price of a new one is $9.95, in case you were wondering)
Presumably, whoever is lifting these caps is bringing them to the scrap metal places to sell for cash. Since the price of metal has skyrocketed, this may bring in a tidy little sum. I suppose it is too much to ask of scrap metal yards to be a bit more discriminating when someone sells their "wares?" Certainly, a whole bunch of these fuel caps should trigger some kind of action from the scrap yards, like maybe calling the cops?
Unless of course, whoever is responsible for the theft is just a wacky collector of fuel oil filler caps....

Katia,
Add to "the same but different" category:
I saw two ConEd trucks and a lot of men working in the street grate at the corner of Hoyt and Sackett on my way home from a meeting last week.
When I asked what they were doing, I was told that all the copper piping had been stolen and it was dangerous. He didn't answer when I asked how they knew the copper had been stripped.

Hi Maria,
The same happened at the corner of 1st place and Smith Streets in the fall. Someone asked the crew who had been working at that corner for weeks and was told that thieves had stripped all the copper wire there too.
What's next? Fuel oil filler caps?
Oh, that's right. Someone already stooped that low...
Nice blog,
Bobby
It was Bubbles.
bubbles is sober now
he is allowed upstairs
Someone stole our cap as well last week, Carroll Street between Court & Clinton Street. Oil company charged $82 to replace it...
$82???
That seems like highway robbery.
