Closing Time For Pita Grill On Smith Street

oo

A small handwritten sign in the window of Pita Grill at 329 Smith Street simply said: " We are closed."
A quick look through the window explained why. The entire kitchen has been ripped out. Sinks and stoves had been moved into the main dining room and the tables are stacked up on one side.
The closing does not come as a surprise. The restaurant ( complete with kitchen) has been for sale through Awaye Realty for $ 179,000. Besides, the place was mostly empty, though the few times I was in there, the food was all right.
Does anyone have more detail?

FYI: Before it was Pita Grill, the place was a Chinese food restaurant. Then someone plowed a car into the store front and the space stayed empty for a long time.
When I first moved to Carroll Gardens about 24 years ago, it was a liquor store.
Can anyone go back even further?

The wine/liquor store was there since at least the 1950s. Next door, where the nail salon is presently, there used to be (also in the 50s-60s) a candy store owned by a Mrs. Pizzaro. The store had the classic soda fountain counter where you could by Breyer's vanilla ice cream (with the little flecks of vanilla bean in it), or ice cream sodas and egg creams. Towards the rear of the store were several tables & chairs where you could sit and enjoy your treats. Opposite the counter were two huge wood and glass display cases and glass jugs containing all sorts of penny candy: Mary Janes, Bit-o-Honey, Milk Duds, malted milk balls, candy necklaces, licorice strings and rods, pretzels, marshmallow peanuts, all the sorts of sugary stuff my mother didn't want me to have. Despite those admonitions, I can tell you that I was a regular customer as a child!

Dear Maryann,
Thanks so much for this cute little memory.
I just took a photo of the nail place and will post it separately.
Would you remember the name of the candy store?

Maybe this is why they closed:

Stolen Bikes

April 2008 (Earth Day) I had a bicycle stolen from me because I lent it to someone to “take it for a spin.” You can read all about my lack of better judgement here.
Well I learned a lot from that experience and was fortunate to get my bike back with the help of a group of really amazing, dedicated members of our bicycle community.
Because of my tale, I wanted to add a page to this blog which may be used as a resource for those to report bicycle thefts in the hopes of preventing them and getting OUR BIKES BACK.

Here is a really good posting from everyones favorite cycle cynic Bikesnobnyc, about how to not feel like a victim and cope with bike theft.

Dear Mike,

You e-mailed me about 2 months ago about an ad I put on Craigslist about a bike that was stolen of mine. Well I can joyously say I got it back thanks to a friend of my cousin’s from NYC Velo.

My bike was sold in Manhattan to a Pita Grill in Brooklyn. When I went to retrieve it, the woman behind the counter denied it was stolen. SO I called the cops, while waiting I told everyone who passed by not to eat there because they buy stolen bikes. The cops checked out my story. I filed a complaint, had a picture of the bike on my cell phone, the bike had my last name on the bottom tube AND the bike tool I left under the seat remained there . . . so they were pretty sure it was my bike I just needed to let them know the serial number which was easy since it was only the 4th bike built.

I told the cops the delivery people had 30 seconds to return my bike or I would press charges for possesion of stolen goods. They actually tried to get me to throw some bucks at them for replacing the brake pads. Seriously.

When the delivery guy came out to unlock my bike, he said “Sorry.” To which I replied through clenched teeth and jaw, stifling my desire to open a can of whoop ass that would make Dick Cheney say I was being excessive, “You are not sorry, you just got caught.”

There was another bike there (tan mountain bike- it did not look like a delivery bike) and it would not surprise me if these knuckleheads press their luck again with a stolen bike. Its the Pita Grill on Smith Street, feel free to boycott.

Thanks for your help earlier.

-Eileen
