Waiting For The Damn F
Around 9 AM on Monday at the Carroll Street Station
Oh, boy! Were you one of the poor stranded commuters on the Carroll Street platform on Monday morning? I was. I was on my way to an important meeting in downtown Manhattan.
What a scene. With no announcement from the M.T.A., no one knew what was going on.
Only found out later that there was a signal problem between Church Avenue and Borough Hall.
Fun, wasn't it? Were you late for work, dear Reader?

Grrrrr, yes I was so late... 'Fiasco' is a fine word for it, so here's some rhymology: The Belasco/F Train Fiasco Was traveling to a work training session at a new site. Glad to know that was an exceptional situation and not the norm.
I wasn't late that morning, and it is unusual for a Monday Morning (especailly at 9:00)
However, this is a regular FRIDAY issue. It seems on 2 Friday's each month there are fewer "F" trians and the timing almost doubles between trains.
Add to this the "NEW STYLE" trains that were placed on the "F" line and you have Sardine City!
The new trains do NOT seat as many people nor do they even STAND as many people.
Picture these smaller trains AFTER they build more multi-dwellings in Carroll Gardens. Fun, Fun, Fun!
Oh yes, I was late...stuck at Bergen Street. I am fortunate to have been able to walk to another station and take a different line. And I know that these things happen, but the MTA really needs to be better about getting the information to their customers. I was waiting for a good 15-20 minutes before we were told that there were no trains. They were also telling people to take the G train as an alternative, but it did not seem to be running, and how could it have been if the switch problem was at Church Ave?
Yeah, i was late as hell. Fortunately my work is pretty flexible. I think a common theme is that people should be given correct information. Even if you tell people bad news like "no new train will come for 20 minutes", it's far better than telling them nothing. those for whom 20 minutes is intolerable will grab a cab; those for whom getting out and getting another train (Jay St?) makes sense will do that. And those who stay can chill and adjust expectations.
I don't think the new trains are smaller; the old F trains had more seats and less standing; I think the new ones simply have less seating and more standing room.
A subway station shouldn't get that crowded with people. Dangerous.
