Comment Of The Day: Sardine City

oo

"Raised in Carroll Gardens" has left the following comment on the post "Monday Morning F Train Fiasco. Were You Late,Too?":

"I wasn't late that morning, and it is unusual for a Monday Morning (especially at 9:00)
However, this is a regular FRIDAY issue. It seems on 2 Fridays each month there are fewer "F" trains and the timing almost doubles between trains.
Add to this the "NEW STYLE" trains that were placed on the "F" line and you have Sardine City!
The new trains do NOT seat as many people nor do they even STAND as many people.

Picture these smaller trains AFTER they build more multi-dwellings in Carroll Gardens. Fun, Fun, Fun!"

That's a misconception. While they don't seat as many people, they do have more room for standing. You don't have the seats cutting sideways throughout narrowing parts of the train for standing room. While the older trains had specific seats they certainly didn't fit people comfortably. I don't know how many times I've seen the middle seat empty because you can't fit between two people.

Hi Anon...

The new style trains are not as large: sitting or standing.

While each bench, between the doors, on these new trains seat 5-6 (due to pole positon even 6 average sixed people have trouble fitting) while the older trains seat 10 people. Even if each 'middle seat' goes unused that's still 8 seats compared to 5-6. Then there's the end seats. That ratio is greater on the old style, too.

Standing: Please keep in mind that while the seats that jutted out on the older trains afforded room for only 2 people to stand, the placement of rails & poles allowed people to stand 3 abreast across the rest of the car. While these new trains only stand 2 abreast. (Staggered or not)

Check & see the next time your on the trains. One morning count the number of 'shoulder to shoulder' standees on a crowded older train, then count the number of them on the new style train.

Have you noticed yet that the overhead cooling only blows down on only about a 1/3 of the car? The only vents that work are those mounted in the ceiling BETWEEN the "Notice Boxes"
