Comment Of The Day: Sardine City

"Raised in Carroll Gardens" has left the following comment on the post "Monday Morning F Train Fiasco. Were You Late,Too?":

"I wasn't late that morning, and it is unusual for a Monday Morning (especially at 9:00)
However, this is a regular FRIDAY issue. It seems on 2 Fridays each month there are fewer "F" trains and the timing almost doubles between trains.
Add to this the "NEW STYLE" trains that were placed on the "F" line and you have Sardine City!
The new trains do NOT seat as many people nor do they even STAND as many people.

Picture these smaller trains AFTER they build more multi-dwellings in Carroll Gardens. Fun, Fun, Fun!"

Reader Comment Of The Day: A Simple Action

Anonymous has left the following comment on the post "Velázquez Urges Superfund Designation for Gowanus ...":
There is SO MUCH HOPE from this simple action by Representative Velazquez who is here voicing the will of the majority on this issue. The community knows that the Superfund is the only way we may achieve a better, cleaner environment in Gowanus; yet the mayor (who seems to be bullying everyone on this issue)is representing those elite few who are scheming to make money form a place that they have no intention of ever remediating.
Thank you Congresswoman Velazquez! For Home Page, click Pardon Me For Asking

Comment Of The Day: Senator Schumer Has To Know...

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "
Largest Coalition Of South Brooklyn Civic Groups From Both Sies Of The Gowanus Visit Senator Schumer's Office":
Senator Schumer HAS TO KNOW that the Flushing Tunnel work the City is FINALLY now doing is mandated work that should have been done YEARS AGO!!! The City is only doing this now because it has been BACKED INTO A CORNER with the EPA here ready to tackle cleanup of the toxic Gowanus Canal. Not only is the City's alternate plan insufficient, City taxpayers would be paying for it (as opposed to federal dollar for EPA Superfund cleanup), and the City IS BROKE!!! And now that Newtown Creek has been nominated as a Superfund site, can't wait to see how the City will dance around this once. Will the City say it will clean up Newtown Creek, too? (since they say they can clean better and faster - yeah, right!) Gowanee

Comment Of The Day: Old Guard

To me the big story here is the loss of the power and the loss of the APPEAL of the Carroll Gardens "OLD GUARD", eg the Scottos and their followers. Perhaps they never really had all that power and influence to begin with?

Even many Carroll Gardeners here for generations did not choose to support Heyer and his claim that he was "one of us". Clearly many, many voters in CArroll Gardens disagreed! This is a rather stunning revelation in a nabe that seemed to be all "ruled" by a tiny, handful of people until recently.

As much as they tried to exert enormous pressure on the neighborhood voters, (and they did!) the CG old timers were just not having it. They didn't see the Heyer as Councilman idea as such a good one, and they picked two men from the Slope over one of "their own".

This is really quite a day in the history of Carroll Gardens.

The ever-amazing Josh Skaller who ran a clean campaign without all the dollars and financial support of Lander and Heyer, managed to come in SECOND!! How wonderful is that? Josh must run again!

Lastly, it's such a shame that the voters on the "Hill" and the "Slope" could not, in many cases, see beyond their noses to the all consuming environmental disaster that is the Gowanus Canal; licking at their feet as we speak.

Comment Of The Day: Why Go Through All This?

A reader left the following comment on the post "A Carroll Gardener Furious At Mayor Bloomberg's Anti-Superfund Stance":

The major impetus for the City's plan is for the developers, not for the community. It is Developer Toll who said it is against Superfund because of the "stigma" it will bring to the scam they wanted to pull off that the Gowanus is great waterfront property as is so that they can put their mega condo development here. City Planning gave them the spot rezoning regardless of the outcries from the community that this was not appropriate for Gowanus - esp. since it is so toxic as well as other environmental issues. The City has NO EXPERIENCE with the clean-up Gowanus needs and the EPA will give. The City's fall back plan is that the EPA can take over if the City fails -it also puts more of the co$t of NYC taxpayers. Why do we need to go through all this? Give us EPA Superfund, please!

Comment Of The Day: When Pigs Fly Down Court Street

Anonymous left this comment on Last Night, City Talked Gowanus Alternative Clean-Up Plan, But Didn't Seem To Convince Many

The majority of the community's feelings were succinctly summed up when one of my favorite community activists blew the city a raspberry.
I have one of the postcards that were circulated last night. I think people should take a Sharpie to the pre-printed statement on the card, add a comment in support of the Superfund and thank Clean Gowanus Now! for providing a stamp. Another question that Cas Holloway is supposed to answer tonight is how much the city has spent on lobbyists to DC. The City's plan also creates the potential for protracted litigation without the benefit of collecting treble damages if a PRP is found liable. The City is also relying on funding under WRDA which receives 50 million a year and is shared between all the states. As always, the EPA did a phenomenal job of dispelling any misinformation and providing concrete information in a forthright manner with no spin. The major difference seems to be that if the stars align properly and pigs fly down Court street PRPs will be responsible for 35% of the cost of the clean up whereas with the Superfund PRP's will be responsible for a larger percentage. I am looking forward to Round 2.

Reader Comment Of The Day

Reader comment left on "Thanks To State Senator Squadron, MTA To Review F Train":

Oh, the F... I travel between Bergen Street and 2nd Ave to get to work, and farther uptown during the day for site visits, and am considering working the amassed hours I have spent waiting for the F into my bills for clients: travel time, courtesy of the F. I can't help loving the F a little, too. It's like having the world on our train.

Reader Comment Of The Day: "That's What I Miss"

Regarding the post:
Hey, Neighbors! Pardon Me For Asking, But...

A reader had this to answer to the question:

"If you ever moved away from Carroll Gardens,
what restaurant would you miss the most?"

Restaurants? I've lived here all my life, and the restaurants were not at the top of my list.
What I would miss:
The Good Friday Procession at St. Stephen's Church.

Walking down Court St and stopping every 20 feet to say hello to a neighbor.
Walking around the neighborhood at Christmas time to see the holiday decorations.
The front gardens.

I would miss being able to do all my grocery shopping on foot, never using a car.
I would miss Court Pastry...even if I have to wait on line for an hour at Christmas time.
And while I am on the topic..
Things I miss from the old Carroll Gardens:
The Maria Addolorata Feast

The St. Mary's Bazaar

The "Pork Butcher Shops" on Court Street

Frances' Vegetable Store
Tucker,
the vegetable vendor w/ the horse

Hearing the old timers speaking Italian along Court St.

Watching Bocci in Carroll Park (there was a fist fight once between 2 old men)
Going to Sunday Mass w/ St. Mary's Class.
St Mary's Band and having my Grandparents and all my aunts, uncles and cousins around.
That's what I miss.

L.I.C.H. Doctors On A "Mission" To Reverse Rumors

LICH is the best. Continuum is absolutely the worst. Don't get me started on its poor management. The relationship between LICH and its owner is like seeing the most beautiful girl in high school go out with the school bully.

'Pardon Me' Reader Comment Of The Day

How can the city seriously be thinking of adding 475 or so units of housing on the Toll Brothers site (a site served only by the B75 and B71) while at the same time subtracting these bus services?
This must be the same new math the city is teaching in the school system. That is: multiply the need for service, then subtract as much service on all ends, and this will result in what? A successful community?
