Comment Of The Day: Old Guard

oo

To me the big story here is the loss of the power and the loss of the APPEAL of the Carroll Gardens "OLD GUARD", eg the Scottos and their followers. Perhaps they never really had all that power and influence to begin with?

Even many Carroll Gardeners here for generations did not choose to support Heyer and his claim that he was "one of us". Clearly many, many voters in CArroll Gardens disagreed! This is a rather stunning revelation in a nabe that seemed to be all "ruled" by a tiny, handful of people until recently.

As much as they tried to exert enormous pressure on the neighborhood voters, (and they did!) the CG old timers were just not having it. They didn't see the Heyer as Councilman idea as such a good one, and they picked two men from the Slope over one of "their own".

This is really quite a day in the history of Carroll Gardens.

The ever-amazing Josh Skaller who ran a clean campaign without all the dollars and financial support of Lander and Heyer, managed to come in SECOND!! How wonderful is that? Josh must run again!

Lastly, it's such a shame that the voters on the "Hill" and the "Slope" could not, in many cases, see beyond their noses to the all consuming environmental disaster that is the Gowanus Canal; licking at their feet as we speak.

Though I agree with what was said about the "Old Guard" of Carroll Gardens, I think that some of the short comings of some of the civic groups in and around Carroll Gardens is that they fail to realize that as important as the Gowanus Canal issue is, it is not the only impportant issue. There are other issues that effect the daily lives of our residents, both old and young. The 39th Council district is more than Carroll Gardens, it is the size of a small town and should be looked at as one, with problems in education, housing, senior housing, public safety and other city services, etc. Lets stop thinking that we are the world. Next time we interview those who want to run for office lets ask them questions about the canal and everything else that effects us.

I don't think of them as the'old guard' of CG; just rent regulated tenants scared of losing their 'entitled' housing. Believe me, that is the only issue these people care about!

Dear "Landlord Said..."

You knew what you were doing when you (or the person who left you your building) signed-up for rent regulation. You either bought a Stabalized Building or was 'willed' one.
While I agree that Rent Reg Apartments should NOT be passed along to adult(non-handicap) children, you and your ilk need to stop pushing out the elderly.

Regarding the elections -
I must admit I was on the fence for a bit.
THEN... I started getting letters jammed in my mailbox from 1 Scotto or another. THAT helped me make up my mind. If a Scotto is FOR IT then Carroll Gardens should be AGAINST IT!

I agree. We are NOT a 1 issue neighborhood. I agree with each bullet point you noted (Public Safety, Senior Housing, etc.) but must add FEDERAL Services. We need our own postoffice branch and we need postal workers who can actually read and speak English OR who can at least tell the difference between a Garden/Walk-in/Basement Apartment and the above ground apartments in a multi-dwelling. :-)
