Happy Holidays To All!

oo

Brooklyn Brownstone at Christmas Time ( I swear its not my house)

My little family is heading South tomorrow to celebrate Christmas at Opa's house. Opa is the German word for Grandpa. This is the fourth Christmas without my mother, but we are managing to hold the family together. I think she would have been proud that we are still following the same crazy traditions she imposed on our family so long ago.
Though I am not crazy about the 12 hours of driving, I am looking forward to spending some time with my dad. I am kind of proud of the way he has been managing these last few years on his own. This last week, he has been calling me almost every day to talk about the elaborate Christmas meals he has planned. Its kind of cool that he got into cooking. He makes a killer paté and an even better coq-au-vin. Not that I would know, since I don't eat meat. But its impressive the way he has become domestic. If my mother knew...
So that is my Christmas this year! Wishing you all a great Holiday Season!

Dear K...
I must say I have enjoyed your blogspot this christmas morning and think
fondly of Christmas-past with you, T, B, H and I....

We do need to catch up soon,
But his Christmas morning I wish so much there was a reader comment section
to your Blogspot!

You may post this for me........

My Dear Pardon Me for Asking, Just Curious Girl,

Your Blog is a pleasure to read and I so love your worldwide collection of
misappropriated turns of English phrases into fabulous faux-pas.

It reminds me of my wonderful college roommate in NYC.
She had been raised in Germany and France before moving to the states and
was very gifted in languages as well as in design. I too collected little
funny turns of phrase that emerged innocently and prophetically form her
mouth and I have these little treasures tucked away to this day; they still
bring a smile to my face each time I read them.

May a share a couple?
Two 20-something vibrant young women studying fashion design in NYC in a
highly competitive environment, the foreign-born student whispered to me
about a third student's presentation, "We need to watch that one, I think
she has interior motives."

Reflecting back on a date with what turned out to be an uninteresting,
superficial young man, my generous foreign-born friend searching to give the
young man some benefit of the doubt said, "Maybe shallow waters run steep?"

There are many more, I must find that journal.

Of course, one day the tide turned, after we graduated I moved to Austria
and I needed to learn to to speak German. My former roommate and her
American husband visited me in Vienna. For the first time I was speaking
with my long-time friend in her native language....... I am sure she had
more than a laugh or two over my Foreigner Faux-pas.

As you may have guessed, my roommate was "Just Curious".
And me, ? I am still impressed with all her observations and multiple
talents that she weaves and translates into her multi-cultural life.

Mit Herz..........
