What's Going On In Carroll Park?

oo

Hey Carroll Gardens Friends,
Just read the latest round of emails from the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association. Seems that there was a little scare with a potential child snatching in our favorite park yesterday. I am not an alarmist and cannot confirm if all the details are correct but hey, this is my park and I used to go there with my kids when they were small, so I am copying the email here.

I am writing this on behalf of Christine (Cole's mom in K-113) because she does not have computer access. She spoke with Giselle today and is was going to the 76th precinct to fill out a report. Her 4 year old daughter was being lured out of the playground at Carroll Park yesterday by a white man, skinny, nondescript, possibly in his 30s with a baseball cap and sunglasses on. He has a very cute, small puppy (some kind of shiitsu mix). The man was talking to a number of mothers saying he comes to carroll park reguarly, despite no one in retrospect, having seen him there before. He was in the big kids playground area with his dog but NO child. Later, he quietly asked the little girl to come with him to get a drink for the puppy and she followed him out, however, when the mother realized she called her daughter back to her and the guy took off. Please alert everyone that you know to be extra vigilant for all of our children.

This allegation is completely UNTRUE. This "man" is a 15+ year resident of Carroll Gardens and HAS a daughter that has been to that park with her father since she was born!! Christine was chatting with another mother and her daughter and "this man" earlier this week in Carroll Park without concern. This is a complete over-reaction on this mother's part. As any New Yorker would know, this is a small community and everyone knows everyone else's business. I am outraged that this woman has continued this slanderous story. Sadly, we do have some horrible people in our communities. This is absolutely NOT the case. Maybe this mother should be more attentive of people's kindness and not take it to be an "abduction".

Hi Audra,
( Could you be the Audra from Audra Rocks?)
Thanks for updating us. I know the police did a great job in checking this out and you are right. The mother really overreacted. I guess we are all too quick to believe the worst. I love Carroll Park and volunteer lors of hours gardening with the Committee To Improve Carroll Park. I have never felt that the kids were in any danger. Lets hope it stays that way.

i also know the man involved and want to assure anyone and everyone that the allegations and resulting gossip are completely false! He is a neighborhood dad who was walking his dog plain and simple. As the mother if two young children I know that it is my responsibility to watch my kids! We all know kids are curious and wander, that was not his fault or his responsibility!
He is a wonderful father and a great person who did nothing wrong and absolutely did not deserve to have this happen to him!

I am so glad that everything is resolved. The entire story sounded a bit scary but too cliché what with the little dog as a lure. Lets just be glad that everything worked out. I for one will continue to enjoy the park and hope that everyone else will too.
