Having A Lovely Time On Montague In 1905

oo
Gertrude must have had quite a lovely time on Montague Street back in 1905. Yes, I guess I would too. Doesn't it look cool without cars, just with public transportation? Friends, we need to bring streetcars back...
The caption on this old postcard is : "Montague St. Showing Site of Old Academy of Music, Brooklyn, N.Y. That's no mistake. The first Academy was located at 176-194 Montague . The opening concert was on January 15, 1861. Unfortunately, it burnt to the ground on November 30, 1903. So when Gertrude visited our fair borough in 1905, there was a big hole where the academy once stood.
According to the street numbers, it was located between Court and Clinton Streets, present location of the apartment complex housing the Garden Of Eden store.

And this is how it looked!

Looks almost identical to today, minus the traffic... But, on a weekend morning things are a bit quiet.

Yes, if you get up early in the morning...
I agree, Montague sure looks pretty much the same. Thank Goodness the area was landmarked in plenty of time to save its character.

I went to Montague Thanksgiving morning and found a warm and friendly neighborhood of people just out and about... Not too many cars, in fact there were plenty of parking spots on Montague. I parked in front of the Starbucks and had a wonderful time with my family.
