Not Exactly A Penthouse On Union Street!

oo

Readers, today I saw something dreadful, something that made me a bit queasy. I need to share it with you so that you may understand the full extend of my shock and dismay. On Union Street, between Smith and Hoyt, in the middle of the block, there is a house with a very ugly structure on the roof. There, way up, cell phone antennas, protected by a corrugated metal shelter and lots of black cables. How ugly, how sad. Are the earnings from hosting such equipment so significant that one would consider such insanity? Does anyone know how much money one makes for playing "host"? And pardon me for asking, how high would the sum have to be before you, dear reader, would consider bastardizing your house in such a shameless way?

That's been there a while. Over a year.
When it was going up I was told by the installer that it was a back up generator for the building.
Perhaps it's just now doing double duty?

A back up generator?
Is this normally something that a building really needs?
Whatever they put up there, it is hideous. Could they have pushed the structure further towards the back so that it is not so obvious?

I live further West on Union (between Court and Clinton) and the whole archcitectural consistency was destroyed by the building of a bunch of two-story, white railing brick townhouses there soome years ago.

My dearest hope was that there might be some way to updgrade these homes so that they'd blend in more than the other homes.

Instead, one of the homeowners converted one of the homes into a hideous, marble-clad mausoleum.

After that, it's almost like the block has been ruined beyond repair -- what difference will a cell tower on one of the classic brownstones make?

Then a person with very questionable taste

Years ago it used to be several thousand dollars a month and i think it depends on the size/height of the building along with the location of course. It is in fact significant however ugly it may be. You'd think they'd be able to disguise in more attractive way. Oh well.
