Once Upon A Time They Were Crayon Companies In Brooklyn

oo

The Imperial Crayon Company, the Globe Crayon Company and the Art Crayon Company Just three of the Brooklyn companies that made art supplies. Crayons, chalk and water colors, too. Aren't the graphics just too wonderful ?

So dear readers, did any of you own one of these sets?

Yes, in fact. After seeing the Kiddie Klay it came back to me. I'd never seen any of the crayons before though. Crayola crayons were and still are the best. The rest were less than second best.

I didn't own any of these but they are wonderful to look at. Where did you find them?

Enjoy your blog! Thanks,

Hi Mim,
I am glad you enjoy those old boxes of crayons as much as I do. I have been collecting images of Made In Brooklyn for a while. I find them a bit all over the net. I will be posting some more in the next few weeks, so keep on checking back.

Frank,
How cool that you actually remember the brand of clay. I love that clown. I don't know from what year it is. Would you say 1950's or 60's?

These are amazing, where did you find them? I love anything that is retro especially old advertiseing and products, and especially things having to do with Brooklyn - so this is just my sort of thing! (My roots are mostly in Brooklyn)

I found you through Lost City BTW, your blog looks great!

Sorry, I meant I found you through Jeremiah's Vanishing New York.

Hi Laura

I wish I owned some of these but as I mentioned before, I collect the images on the internet. You have no idea about all the stuff that used to be produced here in Brooklyn.
I'll post more soon.

A little late for a post, perhaps! I own a satchel, containing a small blackboard and two packets of Regent chalk, produced by the United Crayon Company in Brooklyn. It's a marvellous thing. Glad I discovered your post.

I have a box of Bri-tone crayons, No 16, excellent condition, two crayons missing. Is there a market for these items?

I have a box of unused Imperial chalk with the clown on the box. All the crayons are in this box and none of them have been used. I was wondering if anyone knows what they are worth.

I seem to to be a day late and a dollar short but I just had to comment -- my great uncle used to work for the Art Crayon Company back in the 40's. The letters he wrote during the war give a vague idea of all the crazy sorts of things they were working on there for the war effort. It was all a bit hush hush, you know... Anywho, great graphics and thanks for posting!

Hi Balwearie,
If you ever want to share some of those letters, I would love to post them on Pardon Me.

I just picked up two boxes of bri-tone crayons today at a thrift store for 25 cents each. I love vintage items. Found your blog by looking up images.

I'm so excited to find this page! I just got a box of 8 colored dustless chalk sticks made by the Art Crayon Co. Inc. I've been searching the web all day trying to find info on them but no dice until this page. I would be happy to take pics for you, as both box and chalk are in amazing condition. It's actually called Robin Hood chalk, and seems to share a logo with the above-pictured watercolors.
