The only reason not to bring your dog out into the street to do his or her business.
Curb your dog=
Bring Your Dog Into The Street!
Do not have your dog relieve itself on the sidewalk, stoop or gate of someone's property.
However, is it realistic to expect neighborhood dog owners to take their dogs into the street to do their business?
What do you think?

It is absolutely realistic to expect dog owners to curb their dogs. They don't have to go actually INTO the street, the curb is sufficient. And yet, even at the curb, dog owners are required by law to clean up. There is no excuse for doing otherwise. It reached the breaking point for me after repeated sidewalk dumps in front of my house, and I purchased a "please clean up after your dog" sign and attached it to my front fence. I have a dog myself, and I would never dream of having her relieve herself on someone's stoop, sidewalk, tree pit, or whatever. To the curb we go...and if she pulls in another direction, I gently pull her back, and then I clean up after her. If I am required to do so, then everyone is required to do so. Sorry to sound harsh, but this is a significant pet peeve for me (pardon the pun, please).
Of course it's a realistic expectation. Dog walkers in other neighborhoods can manage it. What's wrong with the people in this neighborhood that it's such a problem for them ? If I allowed my child to do that there would be an outcry but dog owners are excused ? I think not.
I have always been astounded by how rude and unsanitary some dog owners are. Would they want doggie discharge in front of their house? Wiping/scooping with a shopping bag doesn't adequately clean the sidewalk. I am tired of having to walk and dodge dog pee. This is a respect and health issue. Neighbors, clean up your act and curb your dogs!
Every morning I walk my kids to school and I have to walk first so that they don't have to walk through dog-owner poop (I don't blame the dog).
Hi all,
I am so glad I am not the only one p*ssed at some dog owners. (Sorry, couldn't resist)
By the way, do you know of any dog owner who has ever gotten a fine for not picking up after their dog?
I am just wandering if the law is ever enforced...
Does the law apply to #1, #2 or both?
I have heard of people being ticketed for not scooping poop, though not in Brooklyn. As a dog trainer I support curbing dogs and I certainly pick up after them. I get just as angry when I see someone not cleaning up after their dog as I do when I see someone letting their kid potty in public (and some adults for that matter).
Funny. I walk by this sign every day, with my dog.
And I'm offended in some way, because I am a responsible dog owner who always picks up the poop, and the sign says not to even walk dogs on his property, which to me is ridiculous because it's a public sidewalk in Brooklyn.
I'm tired of bad dog owners giving dog owners a bad name. Now I just feel guilty walking by the sign, as if someone's monitoring my every move.
Also - I can't find ANY law that talks about urine vs. feces. I have a male dog and his natural urge is to mark his territory - on something. If I were to bring him into the street to pee, the only thing he'd find there would be your car. I never let him pee on anything a human hand will touch, such as a trash bag on the street, or flowers in a tree pit. But a sign post, yes. A fire hydrant, yes. Is this wrong?
Is it against the law to let my dog pee on a tree?
I wondered what the owner of the sign in this post was like. Was he angry? Insane? I got my answer a few weeks ago, when I was walking past without my dog (in disguise) and saw another sign on the same tree. It said: "Whoever took my sign down, I'm gonna take YOU down." The man happened to be on his stoop, and I couldn't resist talking to him.
I asked him what happened with the sign...and he launched into an expletive-filled description of how he basically hates all dog owners. He went on to say how his grandkids have to play on the sidewalk in all the f*cking sh*t and all the f*cking piss. I swear he dropped the F bomb about 10 times. My interaction had confirmed what I suspected: don't bother having a discussion with this person, because he's made up his mind about me and all other dog owners already.
in my comment above - i refer to the new sign that says DO NOT WALK DOGS ON THIS PROPERTY
Sadly I don't own a dog myself but I walk my friends dog a few times a week. One curbs a dog as much as possible...and you clean up the poo..pee dries up..dogs need to mark territory hydrants, trees, poles whatever...Responsible owners don't allow them to pee or poo in the middle of the sidewalk and i've never known or heard of any owner allowing them to go 1 or 2 on anyone's stoop. I frankly don't care about some ones kids on the sidewalk...its not a playground!
Its just pee, walk around it, it dries up!
Its not your property...its public space get over it.
