Way Back When: Work Under The "L" Circa 1900

oo

Circa 1900

I fell in love with the little kid standing in the street, observing the goings-on in this vintage photo.
I know that this picture was taken in Brooklyn. The inscription at the bottom clearly reads: "Removing Wood Blocks & 5" Concrete Under "L", Brooklyn. But an attempt to search for Fink's Department store to get an idea of the location, has come up empty. Would anyone like to venture a guess?

I would venture a guess that this is either Myrtle Avenue or Fulton Street in the days when elevated trains ran on both of those streets. I believe the Myrtle Avenue el came down in the late 1960s. I remember sitting at my desk near the window of St. Joseph's High School on Bridge Street and watching the Myrtle Avenue trains running into and out of the Jay Street terminal station...instead of paying attention to my teacher....

How very cool! Thanks for sharing.
Honestly, I am not sure I would have been able to concentrate either with the comings and goings of trains in front of a classroom window.

The trains were several blocks away, so it wasn't noisy at all; I guess I didn't make that clear. Anyway, it just struck me as a possibility since both Myrtle and Fulton were major shopping streets in those days, more so than now.
