A Split Second Reaction...

oo

On the way to the beach in South Carolina last week, something happened that still flashes in front of my mind.

One minute, I am sitting in the car with my family, in the next minute... things happen in front of me in slow motion. Noise, debris flying across two lanes, screams. A split second decision and a quick evasive manoeuvre was all that saved us from being hit.
The old man in the car below was not so lucky. He had come straight into our lane from the opposite direction. Maybe he fell asleep, maybe he lost control of his car, but he kept going until he collided with a red pick-up. Then a third car slammed into his car as well. We could have been the fourth. The old man was hurt quite badly.
Luck? Yes, luck was involved and my husband's quick reaction.

When it happened, we were about twenty miles from the beach.
Life can change in an instant, we are always told. It can indeed. Just like that...

Wow Thank god you are ok. I don't know if you were on I95? but that is one of the most dangerous roads in the USA. Actually driving down there in the South is very scary, Everyone has a Pickup truck or a SUV and can crush a car in a second. They seem to drive faster than normal in the South.

Hi Anon,
Actually, it was after we had gotten off 95. The road had four lanes, two in each direction, with no divider in the middle. That is why, when the old man came towards us in his car from the opposite direction, there was no barrier to stop him. He just kept going straight into our lane.
I don't care to repeat that experience anytime soon.

Wow! Those pictures look quite gruesome. Glad to hear you are okay.

By the way, I'm from the south, never been in an accident, no points on my license, and I haven driven from one coast to the other. :)

Seriously my wife and I now have a 15 month old son. I think about our safety whenever we are about to hit the road. We always say a little prayer before we leave our home, especially when going out of town.
