The 'Conscrits 2008' Of Our French Village

oo

One of the most fun events during the summer in our little French village is when the 'conscrits' go from house to house in the community to ask for a bit of money with which to party. You see, the conscrits are the young people who turn 18 in any given year. In former times, this meant that they were off to do their military service. Therefore, their elders gave them some pocket money so that they could enjoy themselves one last time.
In the last few decades, the number of young people in our village has been dwindling. So I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of them there were this year.
They sure had fun that night at the little party organized in the community meeting hall. They posed for this picture the next day.
Next year, I will have to make sure that my son takes part in the festivities.
