Going To The Market In Ambert
Am I writing too much about food, dear friends, for if I am, please let me know. And while you are at it, please keep me away from the delicacies I find everywhere. I am afraid I will come back to Brooklyn twice the person I was.
Yesterday, in Ambert, I stopped at my favorite fromagerie, ' Le Cantalou.' Since last year, I have been dreaming of their Fourme D'Ambert, the creamy blue cheese that takes its name from this small town.
The friendly sales person was chuckling to herself when I asked her to wrap up a huge piece for me. I explained that I had just arrived from Brooklyn and that I couldn't wait to taste some of her cheese. She thought for a moment and then said: "Perhaps we can send you some through the mail."
I expressed skepticism. What if the parcel got lost? What if customs did not allow the shipping of fresh cheese? No, I decided, I was going to enjoy as much of the Fourme d'Ambert while I was here and take a picture of her cheese mobile to remind me when I had returned to Brooklyn.
After I snapped the photo, I handed her my business card which had the link to my blog on it.
I will put your photo on the internet, I told her. She seemed pleased.
As we payed for the cheese, my husband and I were trying to give her the exact change, but as I handed her the money, I realized that we were short two Euros. I started looking in my wallet for the extra money, but she just waved her hand.
"Non, non, ça va!" she told me. "It's all right like this. The two Euros are for the picture you took of me."
I told her that I would definitely post her photo.
As we left, she shouted after us. " My name is Marie-José."
So, Marie-José of La Fromagerie Le Cantalou, if you see this:
Merci pour votre gentilesse. Et la Fourme était formidable.

I share your passion for cheese: it just makes me crazy! I do not buy cheese too often, because I just cannot control myself and can finish a good piece in just a while! Mon Dieu, le fromage!! :-)
