More Store Closings...This Time, On Atlantic Avenue

oo

Atlantic Avenue between Henry and Clinton Streets

Former home of Pomegranate at 152 Atlantic Avenue

Former Dhaka at 148 Atlantic Avenue

Former news stand at corner of Atlantic and Clinton Street

There is no denying it. The number of empty storefronts on Smith Street and Court Street is getting worrisome. Yesterday, I walked down Atlantic Avenue. I passed Pomegranate Looms, a nice place for wonderful rugs, ceramics and fair trade products and was surprised to see it closed. Two doors down, Dhaka, an Indian restaurant, was also empty. Both have closed recently.

Around the corner, another empty storefront. The news stand at the corner of Clinton Street and Atlantic is for rent.
No doubt, this is just the beginning. How very depressing.

Add Zaida's House of Beauty salon at Smith & Warren. Zaida's been there 18 years and her rent is now unaffordable and is closing next week. One more casualty of the Smith Street rent wars.

Just wanted to add that Brawta is now officially closed. A small gift shop that was around the corner on Hoyt Street closed and is now a politicians office. A tween designer store next to Bedouin Tent on Atlantic near Bond is closed. The place that was once Magnetic Field is still empty. And one of the antique stores near Bond that closed a while back is now a storefront psychic! Ditto with that newsstand you have pictured on Clinton: Another psychic.

Welcome to the new economy folks.
