$750 for polluting the waters of the Gowanus Canal nine times? Even in 1950's terms, that sounds like a rather small amount of money.

The polluter? Brooklyn Union Gas, which was responsible for polluting the Public Place site, where it operated a coal gasification plant
. Brooklyn Union became Keyspan and is now National Grid.

It seems that there are those "concerned" about Superfund designation because these buisnesses will now be asked to pay for their share of the cleanup costs. These companies have made profits for decades because they didn't have to pay for their mess all these years. How can the local represenatives be against the Superfund process for the canal?
