New Window Gates At PS58 Make The School Look Like A House Of Detention

oo

Public School 58 has been under construction for many months. The roof is being replaced along with all of the windows. The new windows are a vast improvement over the tired old ones and they make the building look nice and cheery.

But wait! What's this? Just today, the construction crew installed black grates which make the building look more like a house of detention than a public school.

What possible reason could there be for covering each and every window with black grating?
It can't be for security, because according to some people 'on the inside', only the window's bottom panel opens a few inches towards the outside. It has also been reported that the gates make the classrooms awfully dark and blocks the view of the outside.
How depressing for the children and the teachers.

Ssince your photos is of the play yard side of the school, could the window gates be there to prevent a ball or some else thing crashing through the window. Are these gates going up on the windows not fronting on the school yard?

I am pretty sure they went up on the First Place side too, but will double check as soon as the rain stops.

Hi Katia,
I am a parent at the school and I agree that this looks awful.
How do we get these grates removed or, at the very least, painted in a lighter color?

Who do we speak to? DOE or is this something that the principal can help with?

Are they grates or heavy duty window screens?

Anon,
They may be heavy duty screens, but they look as if they have been installed permanently especially since the windows can't be opened more than a few inches

The purpose of the gate is likely the profit of the gate company

The window guards will be installed on all of the windows once they in place. The are intended to protect the glass. As far as the options available and the decision made to select those as an option, no information on that is being disclosed by insiders at P.S. 58 at this time.

What is the purpose of those gates in the beautiful historic district of Carroll Gardens?!!
Who made this decision? Shame on them! I think ChickenUnderwear is on to something!

Those poor students and teachers! I can't imagine those gates will inspire much learning or happiness.

Just when you thinking something is improving.....think again. The Dept. of Education strkes again!!!

Those gates are not only ugly, but they are a waste of money that could otherwise be spent on supplies and equipment that could enhance the children's education. Shame on them!

what will be the effect of less natural light on our children's learning ability?
