Just when I thought I saw it all, these photos land in my mail box.
They were sent to me by Rose, a resident of Carroll Street, near the Gowanus Canal. Rose writes that on Saturday, during the rainstorm, this opossum appeared in her backyard. She just had enough time to grab her camera and take these pictures.
Rose has seen this critter only once before, but her son spotted him a few times around the neighborhood.
I know that there is quite a population of raccoons living in the area, but I had never heard of opossums making their home by the Gowanus. Isn't this amazing? Have other area residents had the pleasure of meeting this little fellow?

Katia,
Opossum have been spotted in the Kensington/Windsor Terrace neighborhood; I think they are residing in the Greenwood Cemetary along with lots of other wild life.

Katia,
There has also been sightings of opossum in the Windor Terrace/Kensington area. I think they are living in Greenwood Cemetary with all the other wildlife.

We live across the street from Prospect Park in Windsor Terrace and we had an oppossum residing in our backyard for a few days. It was actually a bit of a scary beast -- those teeth mean serious business.
They're all over Marine Park!
Anonymous 4:42 PM - are you serious? Scary beast?!? Don't be a dimwit. Opossums eat mostly fruits, vegetables, insects, and the occasional carrion.
You have nothing to fear. He should be much more afraid of you and other humans harming him than you should be of him harming you.
Man has already decimated the natural habit of the New York area enough, the least we could do is tolerate and (God-forbid) celebrate these occasional sightings of life besides pigeons, rats, and cockroaches in our city! Go opossum, go!
seen several in midwood, as well as racoons
They're all over Marine Park
Yay, opposums! They also visit my backyard in Flatbush.
I think these are called Rats in Brooklyn
I saw him/her/it on Union and 8th on March 21

Brooklynn: the poor 'possum seemed to be trying to establish itself permanently in my backyard, near our rear door. Whenever I attempted to enter the backyard (only possible by passing by said possum's temporary lodging), it would stand up and approach me, baring its teeth. For a time it made the backyard unusable, since it scared the shit out of me. So I evicted it, Giuliani-style: I destroyed its ramshackle housing (consisting of an old sled and some leftover plywood). Haven't seen it since.
Possum, I wish you well, and your brethren well. But please, steer clear of my backyard. By all means, use the park, all 585 acres worth.
