Who are you kidding? If you care so much about green causes, support tolling the Bklyn Bridge and environmental initiatives that can be realized in our lifetime!
Get a grip on reality - Superfund is known for its environmental failures - not success.
anon 8:30 - It took more than one lifetime to get the Gowanus Canal in the shape it's in. Honestly, I don't care how long it takes, as long as it is done right by the EPA - and not some quick City cover job to facillitate quick bang for the buck that developers and our city's mayor is lobbying for. Our "Greenwashing" mayor - wants to plant a million trees - sees all kinds of opportunities for "green" - the opportunity he sees for green in Gowanus is the almighty buck and who cares about the community, health, and environment. And pray tell, how is tolling Brooklyn Bridge a green initiative?
Yes, get a grip on reality - NYC DEP is known for its environmental failures - not success.
NYC has failed in the efforts with the Army Corp. Work begun in 2002 lingers unfinished precisely because NY CITY has prevented the work from going forward.
NY City DEP has failed for more than three decades to bring the Canal into compliance with the Clean Water Act!
Compared to the environmental record of the City of NY, the EPA looks like a High-Preforming-Star.
But are you people really that blind to the fact that the superfund isnt that glorious?..i mean do you research at all ?..yes, the city has neglected the canal for many years, but if the E.P.A is going to be over there shoulder making sure its done right, why not?..why put our glorious neighborhood on this list that will stay with us for years. I just dont see your motive behind all this rallying. The goal should be to get the canal clean with the least effect on the neighborhood possible..no?
Lots of research, anon. Have heard personal accounts and read glorious reports of Superfund successes. What successes have you heard or read about City's cleanup of toxic sites?
10:52. You can read about some wonderful Superfund success stories here: http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/environment/a_superfund.html
Bird sanctuaries, revitalized neighborhoods. Think of what an asset Gowanus could be to the community once it is cleaned up. And some visionary thinking will be possible, too!!!
