It happens every year at the same time. When the days get shorter and deep shadows fall on Carroll Park's bocce court, the elderly players move to the benches on the opposite side, where the rays of the sun reach all day.
They were sitting there yesterday, engrossed in conversation.

That is a beautiful observation.
Pardon me for asking...but how is that there is a LOCKED bocce ball court in a public park? It seems to be a private area for a few men who very seldom use it.
Dear Anon,
The bocce court is open to everyone. The only reason why it is locked is to keep dogs out.
If you want to use it, you can make arrangements with the Friends Of Carroll Park at friendsofcarrollpark@yahoo.com
I am one of the members. We would gladly provide a key to any group wishing to play.
It is kinda pathetic that the bocce court has to be locked to keep people from walking their dogs there.
Winston,
I agree! however, people have even used the children's play areas as dog runs. If the bocce court was not locked, some people would be in there with their dogs immediately
Katia,
Thanks for the info. I've lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years & this has always been a mystery to me. It might be nice if the Friends Of Carroll Park posted a sign & explained that the bocce court is open to the public & how to get a key.
Anon.
It saddens me that dog owners think their dog has the same rights as a "real" child.
Are dogs allowed to play bocce?
When was the last time that you saw anyone actually playing bocce? I know that this is sacrilegious, but perhaps the space could be reclaimed for the entire community to use.
Perhaps Mr. Smith would propose that entrance to the entire park only be by keys so that dog owners could be better regulated.
Hey Anonymous.
I am sure anyone can play bocce. But after a dog owner allows their dog to lifts it's leg on a piece of playground equipment, nobody can use it.
And no we don't need more locks, we need dog owners who realize the world does not revolve around their pet.
My Uncle played there for many years..AND it was always just for the Bocci players. NOW that there are so many dogs the owners probably want this spot fofr their doggie run..please give me a break, they just want the whole park...
