Say, dear Reader, is it just me or are our streets getting dirtier all the time? I was standing at the corner of President and Smith Streets yesterday morning. At that time of the day, the trash cans on all four corners of the intersection were overflowing. Some of the garbage was littering the sidewalk and the curb.
As I was taking the photos, a Sanitation truck came by, which I thought was pretty ironic. Of course, it did not stop.
I walked by again later in the afternoon and there was even more trash piled up.
It was pretty disgusting.
So pardon me for asking, but are we just producing more trash or is Sanitation picking up less?
Have you noticed as well? What gives?

I, too, noticed the overflowing cans on Smith & President. I think Sanitation is both picking up less (i.e., cutbacks) and getting lazy. On my way home from the subway last night at about 6:15 pm, a Sanitation truck was making a very late pickup on President St. The worker was picking up trash and dropping some and then he did NOT go back to retrieve it. He just left it there and kept going. I can't believe he didn't notice it, it was practically in front of him. When I got to my house, I found loose papers and advertising flyers all over my sidewalk that had been blown over by the breeze. They didn't see that either, I suppose.

Thanks for bringing this up. What's going on? Trash is everywhere and we can't blame only the sanitation department. I think there are trash manufacturing plants in the basements of our neighbors. The trash seems to be piled high these days. Are we just such large consumers? Or are we just too lazy to dispose of our trash with a little more thought?
This 1 time I'll give the DoS a small break (very small).
Due to election day they were behind schedule. All regular trash (that's normally picked-up early Wednesday morning) was picked-up very late on Wednesday - - as late as 5:30 on some blocks. They had double duty yesterday, so that might be why they didn't get to the Corner Bins and why there would have been 2 days worth of trash to start with.
However... what's the excuse on the other days?
Are some of those overflowing, neglected trash bins the ones courtesy of Bill deBlassio?
Not to condone non-pickup by th Sanitation dept, but there's another issue at work here...people dropping their household trash in the corner bins.

Please enlarge the photo's and you'll see Household Trash in the corner bins. -NOT ALLOWED. You'll also see Rite Aid Bags with food waste in it. Perhaps the lunch or breakfast of some under paid cashier? -NOT ALLOWED.
The renters OVER the Smith Street Stores do it, too. Ever notice no residential pails along Smith? We've all seen them go to the corner with their household trash -NOT ALLOWED.
It happens on Court Street even more often - - - Hello LeeLee's Boutique! - - - Hello, also, to that new Ices Stand on the corner of Court & Carroll!
Since the 1st day when they built the store, LeeLee has been dumping Commercial Trash as well as their own food trash in the corner bin. I've seen it myself, over & over & over again!
Same for that Ices Stand. Even when they were building the place they dumped their scrap wood into each of the corner bins.
Yes, DoS should come when they're supposed to AND they should pick-up whats been dropped ESPECAILLY when they drop it. But you can't blame them for why it gets so full in the 1st place.
When it rains, the street trash washes into the Gowanus Canal and the EPA has been collecting property addresses from each letter found so they can add those Court and Smith Street building owners to the Potential Responsible Parties list!

Litter is one of my pet peeves. Around me (I'm in Cambridge MA) the amount of litter dropped on the street in the course of a day blows my mind - and it's definitely gotten worse over time. And since I've started picking it up I've come to realize how scarce municipal trash barrels are around here. Time to bring back the Crying "Indian" ad.

I agree that the Sanitation Department is partially to blame for the trash problem. However, the largest part of the blame should go directly to the people who live in this area! Who throws thier empty water/Snapple/beer bottles in the park? Who throws their household garbage into the street baskets? Who lets their dog urinate and defecate in the children's play area in the park? Who drops their empty coffee cups on the sidewalk or leaves them on somebody"s stoop? It's the people right here in this neighborhood and until they change, this is going to remain a pig stye!

You're right. I've seen (and we can all smell on certain days) how pet owners allow their animals to run & poop at random in the Children's Sections as well as the "Green Belt" of Carroll Park.
All the park commitee has to do is show-up an hour after the park "closes" to see the 1st of them.
Being the first home off the corner of Smith st, my trash recepticles become everyones trash can. No matter how much recycling we do I find beer, food containers and other goodies thrown in any recepticle. Plus we have an unoffical "garbage czar" who throws neighboring trash bags at the corners. DOS does a "c" job at best besides being rude and uncaring. Try asking them to move the truck so you can pass on the sidestreets. Too many people in an condensed area will result in more trash.
