Comment Of The Day: The Stoop As Urinal

Hey, Neighbor! You Know That Carroll Park Is Not A Dog Run":

I agree dog owners cant be lumped into one category but when my stoop becomes their urinal even as I'm entering my home you get no sympathy from me. The problem isn't dogs in the park in winter but irresponsible owners feeling no remorse for leaving a landmine in a park. And yes even in winter Carroll Park gets crowded on weekends.

complaining about dog poop is one thing, but urine? give me a break! this is a city, not a suburb. should the pooches wear diapers?

Dog Poop is better than your verbal poop said...

The Law requires you to curb your dog.

Your dog should pee on a tree, on a lamp-post on a corner trash can - - -

You DON'T Let your dog pee on someone's stoop, steps or even thier fence.

(Step in that puddle of piddle & it comes with you in your house!)

Your childish responce, impa, implies YOU shoudl still be in diapers.

Give me a break. A stoop is not the curb, which is where the dog should be eliminating - at worst. If I brought my child to pee on your stoop, you'd be wild.

What does curb your dog mean exactly? Does that mean that dogs are expected to "go" in the curbs and not on the sidewalks that we all walk on? Would appreciate your thoughts.

One evening about a year ago I was walking my dog on a leash by carroll park, when a dog off lead comes running out of the park toward us. The clueless owner was so absorbed in chatting he didnt even notice his dog running toward the street until he heard me yelling to get his @#$ dog. bad dog owners give all responisble dog owners a bad rap. PS if you walk your dog correctly, on your left hand side and walk with your dog to the curb side of the street the dog will not have a chance to pee on a stoop!

This is the same stoop my family and I sit on during the summer nights. No Im not lucky enough to have a nice backyard or an extended front yard like some CG blocks have. Its just an example of inconsiderate pet owners infringing on my quality of life. Your probably a renter with a dog too Im guessing. I know all about city living born in Manhattan raised in the Bronx and now 15 years in Cobble Hill and its just wrong.

Hi Anon 9:11 1/22/10

Thank you for your question. Since you asked...

Curb Your Dog Means... Exactly that - Curb Your Dog!

It means, by law, that you're required to make certain that your dog eliminates its waste (solid or liquid) along the curb - specifically the gutter.

The gutter where the rain water washes away the waste and/or where the street cleaners (when they show-up) clean them.

Many younger/newer dog owners aren't aware that this is a law. However, common sense would dictate that you don't let your dog poop or pee in front of someone's house or stoop.

Keep in mind that in Brooklyn, a city of trees, people don't mind (and are used to) dogs lifting a leg at a tree or Fire Hydrant or lamp-post. - - - All of which are found along the curb.

But curb your dog means that you walk with your dog along the curb side of the street and you allow them to piddle or poop in an available gutter - - that's been the rule for over 75 years.

Pooper Scooper Laws came after but do NOT replace the curb your dog rules. You are supposed to curb your dog AND then also clean it up.

Thanks for your question - since perhaps some people sincerely don't know.
