Gowanus Canal Update:

As was announced at the Environmental Protection Agency's public meeting on December 3rd, 2009 regarding the Gowanus Canal, the agency will be undertaking scientific field work in the next few months.

As part of that work, a
bathymetric study was conducted by an E.P.A. sub-contractor on January 5th and 6th January 2010 using two different boats, one small, one large. (Some preliminary work, such as setting gauges from on-land locations, was done on January 4th.)

Just for your information, bathymetry is the study of underwater depth which will give scientists an idea of the underwater terrain of the Gowanus canal.

Don't worry! I had to look up the word, too.

Great reporting but who was notified this work was being conducted? I thought the EPA would be communicating with us but they are proceeding regardless of our concerns.

Anonymous,

The EPA clearly outlined the work that the agency would be doing at that December 3rd meeting.

EPA even informed the community of the approximate timing of that work.

If you were not there, you can find a full recap by following this link:

Whose concerns?

The EPA is not precluded from proceeding with the clean up process up to the point of implementing a clean up plan. They are now beginning to collect data which will be used as a guide for the best method of clean up. The data will eventually be made available for public review.

The EPA has been very transparent and hope that Anonymous 8:59 will attend next weeks meeting to learn more. These community meetings are also part of the superfund process. Funny, I don't see the city making any attempt to engage the community which they would also be required to do under their "alternative" plan.

Thank you to Christos and his team!

I think 8:59 was hoping for a link to the EPA website - not to another PMF posting. Is PMF the website that people must rely on to lean about the EPA plans?

Not everyone can attend weekday evening meetings.

Katia/PMFA,

Thanks for your exhaustive blogging about the Gowanus Superfund saga. Do you have or know of anyone who has video/play by play of the January 21st EPA informational meeting?

Thanks!
